The Center for Non-profit Excellence

The Center for Non-profit Excellence recognizes the importance of a strong nonprofit sector in a thriving community and the impact that nonprofit collaboration and coordination can have on a local economy. The SUNY Oswego Center for Non-profit Excellence is operated through the Office of Business and Community Relations, and functions to serve the training and technical assistance needs of non-profit organizations throughout New York state. The center is currently conducting a training needs assessment and seeks input from any and all nonprofit organizations.

The Center for Non-profit Excellence is one cornerstone of the community development activities of SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations. It expands on the fee for service consulting previously delivered to broad array of training for boards and managers. It will complement the existing Leadership Oswego County program that is designed to produce civically engaged individuals with a primary focus on service in the nonprofit sector. The center will continue to work the established young professionals groups to provide matching services between Leadership alumni and nonprofit boards. The Center for Non-profit Excellence also provides another context for the public issues forums focused on community development activities.

The target audience for the Center for Non-profit Excellence will be nonprofit boards and managers in Central New York with a primary focus on capacity building and shifting destiny. The target population the Center for Non-profit Excellence are those boards and staff of the over 1,500 nonprofit organizations in Oswego and Onondaga counties in addition to non-profits in the counties that make up Central New York.

The Center for Non-profit excellence is a catalyst for the non-profit sector in the region by increasing the skill level in the areas of governance and management by providing training and consulting services. The Center for Non-profit Excellence offers open enrollment programs and workshops for non-profit executives and board members, as well as customized offerings tailored to an organization’s needs. Services are delivered at the SUNY Oswego’s lakeside campus, its centers in Phoenix and Syracuse, or at site selected by the customer.

The vision is to inspire a professional mindset, develop and instill the professional spirit, and strengthen collaborative efforts of nonprofit arts, culture and human service agencies that will result in an economically stronger community. SUNY Oswego’s Center for Non-profit Excellence is modeled after the best practices of several university and nonprofit based centers. The Center for Non-profit Excellence has also been developed as a result of input from local nonprofit organizations to make sure its programming meets local needs. Additionally, it will continuously research trends and legislation that impact on the operations of nonprofit organizations to maintain a leading edge level of service to those.

The center will draw upon the resources of SUNY Oswego and local experts, professional research and publications to provide the highest quality programming for the nonprofit organizations served
