RSVP to orient volunteers Jan. 22 at Oswego Public Library
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a division of SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations, will hold a volunteer orientation for retired or semi-retired adults at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at the Oswego Public Library community room.
RSVP staff members Ellen Wahl and Tracie Wallace will conduct the orientation, along with guest speaker Jessica Galvin, the library’s technology instructor.
The Oswego Public Library is one of more than 100 agencies and programs with whom RSVP partners to bring needed services and enhance quality of life for Oswego County residents. The purpose of RSVP is to encourage older Americans and nonprofit agencies to mutually benefit from the experience of retirees.
Anyone who is retired or considering retirement and wonders, “What is there to do?” or feel that they want to give back may find this session beneficial, organizers said.
In addition to recruiting, placing and supporting volunteers, RSVP offers Mature Living, a bimonthly newsletter with information that is national and local in scope and interest to older Americans. To sign up for this orientation session or to receive Mature Living, call the RSVP office at 312-2317 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
RSVP has been serving Oswego County since 1973. In those nearly 40 years, the program has been at the cutting edge of the productive-aging movement, launching programs that answer critical needs and help strengthen Oswego County. Those include Tax Aide, 6 Steps to Better Balance and Osteo Bone Builders, to name a few. By remaining responsive to emerging trends and using volunteers as a resource, RSVP seeks to cost effectively make a difference.
Nationally, RSVP, now part of a nationwide network of Senior Corps programs, is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Each of the 700-plus programs in the United States is sponsored by a nonprofit agency; in Oswego County, RSVP is sponsored by SUNY Oswego and the United Way.
