Two exhibitions open Tyler Art Gallery spring season

imageTyler Art Gallery opened its spring season with concurrent openings of “Fifteen Years of Collecting: A Selection of Student Works of Art” and the Art Department Faculty Exhibition on Friday, Jan. 28.

For the retrospective exhibition, 40 works from a variety of media have been chosen from the student collection, which began in 1989. Then-college “President Stephen L. Weber and Student Association President Dan Murphy collaborated on an award presentation at the annual juried student art exhibition” that year, said Mindy Ostrow, curator of “Fifteen Year of Collecting.” “Seven works of art were chosen that year, starting a tradition that continues today.”

When not in storage, some of the collection has been displayed in Hewitt Union and Culkin Hall, but this is the first time that these works have been represented in an exhibition, Ostrow said. The Student Association’s Student Art Exhibition Committee sponsors this exhibition.

The Art Department Faculty Exhibition, meanwhile, continues a tradition where current faculty members showcase some of their latest works and innovations to the campus and community through Tyler Art Gallery.

Both exhibitions will run through Feb. 23.

All Tyler Art Gallery events are free and open to the public. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. weekends.

Persons with disabilities who need assistance to attend gallery events should contact Tyler Art Gallery in advance at 312-2113.
