WRVO FM90 will rebroadcast SUNY Oswego’s Lewis B. O’Donnell Media Summit at 3 p.m. Oct. 24. The theme of the sixth annual summit, “Are You Ready for the New Media?” looked at the social implications of the rapid development of communication technologies.
Broadcast veteran and 1976 SUNY Oswego alumna Benita Zahn, co-anchor on Newschannel 13 in Albany, moderated the Oct. 14 panel that included NPR senior social media strategist Andy Carvin, a new media representative from Apple, an established digital marketer and a 3-D television entrepreneur.
In a packed Sheldon Hall ballroom holding 300-plus, they pondered the torrid pace of technological development and the impact of all this change in the years to come. “This is bigger than the industrial revolution in my mind, in terms of the shift in human culture,” said Dr. Jon C. Landis of Apple’s Northeast Education Development Executive Team.
Panelists discussed Web-based phenomena like Facebook and Twitter that have changed the way people communicate. And companies have begun targeting potential customers based on information they make available on these sites.
While some might find this a convenient way to find goods and services, others have raised privacy concerns. “You have to ask yourself whether it’s relevant to you or creepy,” said SUNY Oswego alumnus Michael Cassidy, founder of digital marketing and media-buying firm Undertone.
Cable television pioneer and 1977 Oswego graduate Louis A. Borrelli Jr. founded the summit in 2005 with a leadership gift. Three years ago, he and NBC “Today” show co-host and weatherman Al Roker, SUNY Oswego class of 1976, provided funding to name it in honor of O’Donnell, longtime chair of Oswego’s communication studies department.
Panelists who are renowned experts in media issues each year interact with students in classes and discussions in a daylong event that culminates with the panel session.
WRVO, the National Public Radio affiliate whose broadcasts originate on the SUNY Oswego campus, also will rebroadcast the summit online and offer a podcast at wrvo.fm.
