Leave Green initiative aimed at off-campus students

An initiative of the city’s Campus-City Relations Committee and SUNY Oswego’s Campus Life during finals week will encourage students residing off campus to donate rather than discard household and personal items as they prepare to leave town for the summer.

Modeled on the longstanding partnership between SUNY Oswego’s Residence Life and Housing Office and the Hall Newman Center for on-campus residents, the new reuse and recycling effort—called Leave Green—is seeking volunteers to help sort items in the Swetman Gymnasium from May 9 to 13. Hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Items to be collected include clothing, linens, area rugs, kitchenware and countertop appliances, electronics, wood and metal furniture, office and school supplies, unopened cleaning products, unopened toiletries, and unopened, unexpired and nonperishable foods.

Agencies planned to receive the goods include the Salvation Army, Hall Newman Center, Friendship Shop in Sandy Creek, Oswego County Humane Society and local food pantries and soup kitchens.

For more information, see www.oswego.edu/leavegreen or call Richard Hughes of Campus Life at 312-2301. To volunteer, call Alyssa Amyotte of SUNY Oswego’s Center for Community Service and Service Learning at 312-2505.
