Versatile indie artist Owen to play Indie Series

Singer, songwriter and self-recording artist Owen will perform Friday, Dec. 3, at SUNY Oswego in the latest Indie Series offering.

Singer/songwriter Owen.New indie group Whiskey and singer Sam Katz will open for Owen at 8 p.m. in Sheldon Hall ballroom. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

In the past decade, Chicago’s Mike Kinsella—known professionally by his Owen pseudonym—played a variety of instruments in bands such as Cap’n Jazz, Joan of Arc, The One Up Downstairs, American Football, Owls, Maritime and Aloha. He returns by popular demand after appearing in the Indie Series last fall.

The talented lyricist’s publisher, Polyvinyl Records, said Kinsella sought a project where he could have complete creative control over all aspects of songwriting, instruments, recording, album artwork and overall artistic direction.

Early this decade, Kinsella headed to his mother’s house, where he turned his old bedroom into a recording studio. His debut album was titled, simply, “Owen.” He followed with “No Good for No One Now” in 2002, increasing his use of lyrical, literary devices for storytelling.

He stepped away from the bedroom studio with “At Home with Owen,” which invited what the artist called a “third dimension” to his work. His latest full-length album is titled “New Leaves,” including the upbeat single “Good Friends, Bad Habits.” A website reviewer for wrote that the new tracks “have a much richer texture than those on previous albums.”

Whiskey, heavily influenced by folk and country music, is a new collaboration for Jon Davis (Another Breath, Night Owls), Bobby Gorham (Engineer) and Brad Gorham (Engineer). Sam Katz, a newcomer to the indie scene, was discovered at an open mic night, where she was playing covers of the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Gregory and the Hawk.

Tickets priced at $12—$10 for SUNY Oswego faculty and staff and non-SUNY Oswego students; $5 for SUNY Oswego students—are available at all SUNY Oswego box office locations, online at and by phone at 312-2141. Parking on campus is free nights and weekends.

Campus radio station WNYO and the college’s Artswego Performing Arts Series sponsor the Indie Series.
