Hundreds of SUNY Oswego student-athletes are ready to rake leaves in the city of Oswego on Sunday, Oct. 27, but they want to hear from senior citizens interested in this free help.

Athletics leaf-raking project for community serviceNow in its ninth year at SUNY Oswego, the project is part of an annual statewide community-service project by Student-Athlete Advisory Council chapters at all 11 SUNY Athletic Conference colleges. SAAC’s mission is to generate a student-athlete voice among Oswego’s intercollegiate teams and to enhance school spirit within athletics.

“Our college and our student-athletes are dedicated to serving and supporting our community,” said Diane Dillon, Oswego’s SAAC adviser and women’s ice hockey coach. “The community is so supportive of our 24 sports, and this is a great chance for student-athletes to get out, make a difference and show their appreciation for local residents.”

Student-athletes will receive a list of yards that need raking and fan out to provide this service starting at 11 a.m. on Oct. 27.
Senior citizens can register to have their yards raked by contacting Dillon at 312-2880 or The project is limited to the first 50 yards registered and offered to seniors living in the city of Oswego. Homeowners must provide their own leaf or garbage bags.

SUNY Oswego’s SAAC chapter welcomes donations of rakes, tarpaulins, gloves or refreshments to help with this sizable volunteer effort. Supporters so far include Lowe’s Home Improvement—which provided a $50 gift card to every SUNY SAAC chapter—and Mark’s Pizzeria, which will help feed Laker student-athletes that day.
