Jazz combos' concert to feature former Count Basie drummer

Rich Thompson, a former member of the Count Basie Orchestra, will sit in on drums for the spring concert of SUNY Oswego’s jazz ensembles on Thursday, April 28.

The concert—featuring the college’s Jazz Ensemble (“Big Band”), Latin Jazz Ensemble and the smaller Jazz Combo—will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theatre. The event is free and open to the public. Donations to support music programs at the college will be accepted at the door.

The repertoire will include several pieces associated with the legendary Count Basie Orchestra. Thompson was a drummer with the orchestra in the 1990s.

Other pieces will include “Tiptoe” by Thad Jones, “Dangerous Precedent” by Frank Mantooth, “Frankie’s Tune” by Bob Mintzer and more selections to be named.

Eric Schmitz, assistant professor of music at SUNY Oswego and a drummer with Oswego Jazz Project, studied with Thompson at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, where Thompson is an associate professor of jazz studies and contemporary media, and drum-set instructor.
