International celebration to showcase cultures, entertainment, food

Students looking at sarees.A West African master drummer. Japanese dolls. Turkish and Puerto Rican food. All that and more await the campus and community March 25 at SUNY Oswego’s second annual International Day celebration.

A kaleidoscope of presentations, performances and table exhibits will take over the college’s Hewitt Union ballroom, 12:30 to 2:30 and 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 25. The celebration is free and open to the public. Visitors would pay for food purchases.

“We are looking forward to this second celebration of culture, language, tradition, dress, food, music and dance,” said Lizette Alvarado, assistant director for study abroad and exchange programs for the Office of International Education and Programs. “It is a community coming together for the purpose of highlighting SUNY Oswego’s international and diverse vibrancy.”

The afternoon begins, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., with presentations on study abroad, the history and customs of Japanese doll display, a class experience in India, living and learning in Ghana and a project to take 1,500 scientific calculators to the West African nation of Benin.

Performances, table exhibits and food will follow, 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Acts will include the college’s Latin Jazz Ensemble, salsa dancers, the O-Swingers, traditional Japanese dance, Turkish Cultural Center performances and Adanfo, the Syracuse-based drum and dance ensemble from Ghana, West Africa. (“Adanfo” means friends and family, according to the ensemble.)

Exhibits will feature study-abroad opportunities in Capetown, Paris, Beijing, India, Latin America and more. Student groups will have tables, including African Student Organization, Chinese Students and Scholars Association, Hart Hall Global Living and Learning Center, International Student Association, Latino Student Union, Study Abroad Student Association and Students for Global Change.
