Two seasonal concerts slated Dec. 11

chorus practiceThe sound of brass instruments will celebrate the holiday season in two events hosted by the music department on Sunday, Dec. 11.

The Syracuse University Brass Ensemble, directed by Dr. James Spenser, and the Oswego Festival Chorus, directed by Dr. Julie Pretzat, will perform at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 103 W. Seventh St. in Oswego.

The program will feature many traditional carol settings for brass and choir as well as “Three Holiday Songs” composed by John Williams for the movie “Home Alone.” Admission to this concert is free, although a free-will donation will be accepted.

Earlier on Dec. 11, the music department will host its first-ever Tuba Christmas. The admission-free performance, at 3 p.m. in the lobby of Waterman Theatre on campus, is part of a national program for which all interested tuba players are invited to rehearse and then perform traditional Christmas carols.

For the players, prizes are awarded for best dress, farthest traveler and best-decorated tuba. Players interested in participating need to attend a brief rehearsal at 1:30 p.m. that day and should register online through a form at the music department’s concert schedule page.

Persons with disabilities seeking accommodations to attend this event should contact the SUNY Oswego music department at 312-2130 in advance.
