Oswego can dig Worms' musical comedy

imageThe Arrogant Worms will bring a blend of humor and harmony to campus when they perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21.

Their performance, in the Hewitt Union main level food court, is part of the college’s Family and Friends Weekend.

The Detroit Metro Times hailed the Canadian troubadours as “ranking right up there with such other social satirists as Monty Python, Frank Zappa and ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic.” The Toronto Globe and Mail added: “The trio’s folk-inspired tunes are melodic and their lyrics are certainly clever, at times reminiscent of the brilliant American satirist Tom Lehrer.”

An Arrogant Worms show emphasizes interactivity, with audience sing-alongs, stage banter and spontaneity included with the act’s three-part harmony. They have recorded several albums—the most recent being 2004’s “Toast”—and just released a DVD of “Semi-Conducted,” their live performance with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

The group started at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1991, as friends performing silly sketches and songs on the college radio station. The succeeding years have seen the trio—Trevor Strong, Mike McCormick and Chris Patterson—perform throughout Canada, the United States and Australia.

Locally, they have performed at Oswego’s Harborfest and to a packed house at the Ontario Center for the Performing Arts Music Hall.

In an interview with the Toledo Blade, Patterson compared the group’s material to the musical comedy repertoire of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, the Smothers Brothers and the early work of fellow Canadian act Barenaked Ladies.

“The main thing is still the humor . . . getting the jokes out there,” Patterson told the Blade. “Music is just something we’re fairly able at, sort of a carrier for the humor.”

The performance is sponsored by the Artswego Performing Arts Series and SUNY Oswego’s Office of Campus Life, which sponsors Family and Friends Weekend, Oct. 21 to 23.

Tickets for the performance cost $14 ($10 for seniors and students or $7 for SUNY Oswego students).
