Kaki King, Ethel to premiere 'And Other Stories ...' at Oswego

SUNY Oswego’s Artswego Performing Arts Series will host the premiere of a new collaborative program by popular guitarist Kaki King with groundbreaking string quartet Ethel at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, in Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theatre.

Kaki KingFollowing the first concert at the college, the partnership will present the new evening-length program “And Other Stories…” at the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA and additional venues [CORRECTED 3-6-2014] nationwide.

“We’re honored and excited to bring to the stage the fruits of a musical partnership between Kaki King and one of the most innovative instrumental ensembles on the contemporary scene,” said Artswego series director John Shaffer.

Hailed by Rolling Stone as “a genre unto herself,” the Brooklyn-based King has recorded five diverse and distinctive albums, performed with popular acts from the Foo Fighters to Tegan and Sara, contributed to soundtracks for films like Sean Penn’s “Into The Wild” and played to growing audiences on her world tours. Public radio listeners know her work through guest appearances and the musical interludes often selected from her albums for programs such as “Morning Edition.”

ETHELReferring to themselves as “the band,” the artists of Ethel are a powerful force in new music, introducing more than 50 new works since the group’s founding. Incorporating amplification and improvisation into their performances, their style is infused with traces of jazz and rock ‘n’ roll. Current members include violist Ralph Farris, cellist Dorothy Lawson and violinists Kip Jones and Tema Watstein.

The sound worlds of Ethel and Kaki King intermingle in the new collaboration premiering in Oswego. Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalov’s new composition for the partnership is included on the program, along with a reimagining of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 6. Pieces from Ethel’s repertoire, and original works by Kaki King such as “Great Round Burn” from her album “Glow,” round out the evening.
