Elements Quartet to offer music, advice during residency

imageThe renowned chamber music group Elements Quartet will meet with college classes, hold an interactive performance session and present its new production “Snapshots” during a residency at SUNY Oswego from March 8 to 10.

“A residency with Elements will fire the imagination with discussion about the innovative work the quartet is doing and how it engages their audience,” said Mary Avrakotos, coordinator of the Artswego Performing Arts Series, which co-sponsors the group’s appearance with the college’s music department. “They will talk about the creative process, the connection between visual imagery and music and ‘making it’ as professional musicians.”

The quartet will hold a public performance of “Snapshots,” a multimedia show featuring music and the photos that inspired them, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, in Tyler Hall’s Waterman Theatre. The innovative and interdisciplinary nature of that performance lends itself well to related educational opportunities, Avrakotos said.

Tying into the production’s basis in memories inspired by pictures, Elements Quartet will address “Psychology and Perception” classes at SUNY Oswego. The group also will perform for an introductory honors course in music and will provide a compelling story for journalism classes, Avrakotos said.

“The quartet’s new program ‘Snapshots,’ will provide an ideal opportunity for students to observe and write about a multidisciplinary arts event,” noted Linda Loomis, who teaches those journalism classes.

“Students are required to understand the passion and training behind an artist’s work” and to translate that into an article based on a question-and-answer session,” she explained. “My goal will be to help students understand the discipline, training and commitment that are part of all artists’ backgrounds as well as the specific qualities necessary to the performance of chamber music.”

The public is invited to an informal, interactive informance at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, at the Lake Effect Cafe in Penfield Library. The group will preview a few selections and answer audience questions at the admission-free session.

Funds for residency work in conjunction with this performance have been provided by Chamber Music America with support from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation and the Chamber Music America Residency Endowment Fund. Media support comes from Clear Channel Radio and Classic FM, WCNY 91.3 FM in Syracuse.

Elements Quartet’s headline show, at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10, is part of the college’s inaugural Ke-Nekt Chamber Music Series.

Tickets for the full-length evening “Snapshots” concert cost $15 ($10 for seniors and students, $5 for SUNY Oswego students). For information or reservations, call Tyler Hall box office at 312-2141.
