Congratulations to our 2020-2021 Scholarship Winners

Maurice O. Boyd Scholarship    Ethan Mitchell  
Dr. Boyd was chair of the Music Department from 1947-1971 and oversaw its rapid expansion after the college joined the newly formed State University of New York in 1948.  Due to his vision and dedication, the department has expanded significantly.  This award has been fully endowed by the Boyd family and is given annually to an outstanding upper classman music major.   Applicants must be a music major or minor and are nominated/selected by members of the music faculty.

Carlos Manobianco Scholarship    Zachary Robison 
Carlos Manobianco taught guitar at Oswego from 1971 until his death in 1986.  He also taught at Syracuse University, Onondaga Community College and Colgate University.  He studied guitar in Europe with Andres Segovia and Sans de la Maza, and in New York under Rey de la Torre.  He was well known throughout the Syracuse area for his work and performed live for Syracuse radio and television stations.  Applicants are nominated/selected by members of the music faculty.

Music Memorial Scholarship   Sophia Moon, Molly Demarco and Ryan Zampella  
The general music scholarship awards are given to Sophomore and Junior music majors who will or have made significant contributions to the Music Department through their performance activities.  Applicants are nominated/selected by members of the music faculty.

Sophie Sarat Welling Scholarship   Zachary Robison   
This scholarship award was established by Victoria Marsh to honor the memory of her mother, Sophie Sarat Welling '34. An alumna of the Campus School and the Oswego Normal School, Mrs. Welling broadened the horizons of her students through music education. As a student teacher, Mrs. Welling was the first educator at the Campus School to introduce her students to foreign languages and cultures through song. The scholarship recognizes and encourages the efforts of a music student at Oswego State.  Applicants are nominated/selected by members of the music faculty.  Candidates must (1) be of junior status during the spring semester (having completed 57-86 credits, including transfer credits, by deadline); (2) have a minimum GPA of 3.0; (3) have exhibited that he/she is a person of integrity and good character; and (4) be a music major or minor, or actively involved in a choral ensemble, music theatre and/or opera productions.

Dr. James "Doc" Soluri Scholarship   Robert Ackerman 
This award is named in memory of James "Doc" Soluri (d. 2006) whose ability to recognize and promote students with the unique potential for becoming outstanding performers will long be remembered.  This award is open to any junior or senior who (1) is a music and/or theatre major or minor; (2) demonstrates through performance, both on and off campus, a high level of achievement and potential in music theatre; and (3) maintains a 2.50 or better cumulative GPA.  Students must apply during their sophomore or junior year (having completed 27-86 credits including transfer credits, by deadline to receive this award during their junior or senior year).

Diane Lucey Ouckama Scholarship  Salvatore Sperrazza   
This award is named in memory of Diane Lucey Ouckama (d. 1990) whose talent and commitment to music and theatre was an inspiration to her family, friends and colleagues.  This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior who (1) is a music and/or theatre major or minor; (2) demonstrates through performance, both on and off campus, a high level of achievement and potential in music theatre; and (3) maintains a 2.50 or better cumulative GPA.  Applicants are nominated and selected by members of the Music and/or Theatre Departments.

Carapetyan Voice Scholarship    Abigail Hines
Leon Carapetyan, professor emeritus, established this scholarship to encourage and support students of singing who are seriously involved in choral music.  It also honors the memory of his father, Caro Carapetyan, whose example of a voice teacher and choral conductor inspired Leon's own career.  Students should (1) be a declared music major whose primary area is voice; (2) maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0; (3) junior standing; (4) show commitment and promise for a career in vocal/choral music by being actively involved in choral ensembles throughout his/her college career; and (5) give a recital in the student's senior year with standard repertoire including French, German and 20th/21st Century English/American song.

Oswego Festival Chorus Scholarship  Angel Tyler   
Applicants must be current students of the Festival Chorus with a minimum of two semesters of previous involvement in the chorus.  Applicants are nominated/selected by members of the music faculty.

Don Levine '78 Music Department Scholarship   Angel Tyler   
This scholarship was established by Don Levine '78. Don was a Music major (percussion) and an education minor whose experiences at Oswego led him to teach instrumental music in several private and public schools, eventually leading to a career in school counseling with at-risk students in Brooklyn, N.Y. 

Robert Baum and Joseph Becker Music Scholarship   Benjamin Coddington   
This scholarship was established by Mar '91 and Cathy Baum in honor of their fathers Robert Baum and Joseph Becker. Robert and Joseph were close friends who spoke every weekend. Though much of the conversation revolved around politics, it was love of music from Verdi to Duke Ellington that kept them connected. This scholarship provides support to student with financial need who are majoring min music.

Music's Distinguished Seinor Award    Nicholas Radford and Christopher Spinelli 
This scholarship is awarded at our annual Honor's Convocation to an outstanding graduating senior.
