Vinh Pham: José Rizal, a glimpse of the Asian José Martí

José Rizal is a key Southwest-Asian transnational writer and revolutionary, who inspired an entire generation of Asian writers in the philippines and the West. Binh Pham's talk will address the issues of race and nationalism in one of Spain's last far-eastern colonues and to consider some canonical implications and interdisciplinary benefits that could be made by situating Rizal as a Spanish-Philippine writer, who is usually bound to "Asian-Studies" within a broad field like "hispanic Studies".
