Professor Hema Rao moved to the U.S. from India in 1970. She earned her BS and MBA degrees from Louisiana State University, and her DBA from Mississippi State University. She is also a licensed CPA from the State of Louisiana. Professor Rao worked in Baton Rouge after graduating and went on to teach at the University of Wisconsin. She also taught in Montreal, Canada and before teaching at SUNY Oswego.

Professor Rao is a professor of accounting and has been teaching at SUNY Oswego for over 13 years. She has provided hands-on instruction in financial statement analysis, undergraduate auditing, corporate finance, non-profit accounting, graduate advanced auditing, and graduate non-profit accounting. Professor Rao delivered web-based education via SUNY Learning Network that was recognized with a Sloan Award. She has also coached CPA candidates for exams as a part of the Becker Review team.

Professor Rao is associated with several organizations including the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the Louisiana State Board of CPAs, and the NY State Society of CPAs. She is trained in South Indian classical music and enjoys making jewelry.
