Penfield Library employs approximately 45 student assistants during the fall and spring semesters. Student assistants work in all areas of the library, both public and non-public service areas, during all the hours that the library is open.
Student assistants are employed in the following library departments: Check-Out/Reserves, Periodicals/Media, Reference, Interlibrary Loan, Government Documents, Technical Services, Acquisitions, Special Collections, and Administration.
Employment opportunities are available for both workstudy and non-workstudy students. Most students work an average of 10 hours per week. Students working in public service areas often work nights and/or weekends. New employees start at minimum wage.
How to apply
Applications are accepted at the end of the semester for the next semester's employment, and during the first week of the semester. Application forms are available at the Check-Out & Reserves Desk on the first floor of the library. You may also fill out this application and attach it to an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Interviews are scheduled during the break and the first few days of classes, and the hiring process is usually completed within the first week of the semester.
Student employment in the library is very competitive. Applicants are evaluated based upon the needs of the library, the compatibility of the applicant with those needs, the flexibility of the applicant's schedule, and grade point average. Previous library experience is not necessary.
