Penfield Library employs approximately 35 student assistants during the fall and spring semesters. Student assistants work in all areas of the library, both public and non-public service areas, during all the hours that the library is open.

Student assistants are employed in the following library departments. If you would like to work in a particular area of the library, please note this on your application.

  • Cataloging / Serials
  • 2nd Floor Service Desk
  • Maker Services / 3D Printing & Scanning
  • Interlibrary Loan
  • Special Collections
  • Stacks Maintenance
  • Employment opportunities are available for both work-study and non-work-study students. Most students work an average of 10 hours per week. Students working in public service areas often work nights and/or weekends. New employees start at minimum wage.

    How to apply

    Student employment in the library is very competitive. Applicants are evaluated based upon the needs of the library, the compatibility of the applicant with those needs, the flexibility of the applicant's schedule, and grade point average. Previous library experience is not necessary.

    Interviews are scheduled during the break and the first few days of classes, and the hiring process is usually completed within the first week of the semester.
