Health Promotion and Wellness

The Department of Health Promotion and Wellness offers a unique multidisciplinary major within the School of Education, leading to the BS degree in Health Promotion and Wellness Management. 

The program is designed to prepare students to work with diverse populations in worksite and community health. Students will be engaged as health education specialists, fitness professionals, health & wellness coaches in private business and industry, community organizations, and health care agencies nationally and internationally.

This degree will provide students the opportunity to select from the following areas of focus: 

  • Wellness
  • Worksite and community health promotion
  • Personal training and strength and conditioning coach
  • Nutrition
  • Wellness and health coaching

Students graduate with a foundation in health science/wellness, fitness, management and human behavior as well as skills in needs assessment, program planning and implementation, and program evaluation.

A graduate of this program may obtain an entry-level position as a health promotion and/or fitness specialist/manager in a healthcare organization, corporate setting, or public agency. Students may also continue with graduate work in health promotion, business administration, nutrition, physical therapy, allied health, nursing, and exercise science.

Overview

The HPW Program Outcomes are also the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO). These SLO are assessed in three core courses: HSC 448 Health Promotion Program Planning, HSC 470 Health Promotion (HP) Program Implementation, and HSC 488 Evaluation and Research in Health Promotion. The SLO are the foundation of our degree program and our core. The SLO aligns with the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) competencies, which state what an entry-level health education specialist should know and be able to do. These include:

  • Assess individual and community needs for Health Education
  • Plan Health Education strategies, interventions, and programs
  • Implement Health Education strategies, interventions, and programs
  • Uses effective communication skills to advocate for Health and Health Education
  • Possesses the skills necessary to conduct evaluation and research related to Health Education
  • Possesses the ability to serve as a Health Education Resource Person
  • Incorporates demographically and culturally sensitive techniques for designing, implementing, and evaluating Health and Wellness Programs
