Open SUNY partners with Oswego to offer business and health programs

Open SUNY is an educational initiative designed by the SUNY system to pool resources and programs from many SUNY campuses across New York state to provide innovative, in demand, online learning programs.

Open SUNY provides prospective and current students with accessible, affordable, distance learning opportunities needed to be successful. Open SUNY overcomes factors that keep students from earning an undergraduate and graduate degrees such as jobs, children, aging parents, and financial limitations by providing access to a range of degree programs at affordable SUNY tuition. Open SUNY provides prospective students anywhere the opportunity to achieve a higher education degree.

SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher has collaborated with New York-based employers to identify growing sectors and design programs that align with existing workforce needs in order to prepare students for positions in emerging fields. As more jobs require bachelor’s degrees, online education could provide a convenient way to educate current workers without requiring them to attend residential college programs.

“Open SUNY will provide our students with the nation’s leading online learning experience, drawing on the power of SUNY to expand access, improve completion, and prepare more students for success,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “In addition to these new, fully-online degree programs, Open SUNY will take every online course we offer at every SUNY campus—now upwards of 12,000 course selections conducted by 7,000 faculty—and make them easy to find and accessible for every SUNY student and prospective learners around the globe,” Zimpher said.

Enrollment in Open SUNY program allows students to access a 24-hour help desk as well as all of the student support services available on traditional campuses such as mentoring, tutoring, degree planning and advisement. Student support systems combined with system level infrastructure and a diverse network of faculty will provide students with the resources needed to succeed in an online degree program.

Open SUNY currently partners with six schools across the state to offer eight different degree programs in a variety of program areas. Current offerings include: applied science in clinical laboratory technologies, business, management and technology, STEM, tourism management, electrical engineering, nursing, business administration, and health services administration with plans to continue to increase offerings in the coming months.

Oswego’s online MBA program was recently named the 14th Best Online Graduate Business Program by U.S. News and World Report and has been chosen by the SUNY system to be in the first wave of programs offered by Open SUNY. SUNY Oswego’s Health Information Technology and Integrated Health Systems post- baccalaureate advanced certificates have also been included in the Open SUNY’s online offerings.

Oswego offers online MBAs in Business Administration as well as an MBA in Health Services Administration, designed to prepare students for leadership roles in the health care industry.

In addition to Oswego, SUNY Delhi, Empire State College, Stony Brook University, Broome Community College and Finger Lakes Community College have also launched online programs as part of the initial Open SUNY roll out.
