Is Graduate School for Me? Graduate Studies Information Session

A student panel of current graduate students will examine the advantages of completing a SUNY Oswego graduate program and discuss the “lessons learned” through their own personal experience. Pizza will be provided.

Jan Allen
Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs in the Graduate School
Cornell University

Jan Allen is associate dean for academic and student affairs in the Graduate School at Cornell University. Prior to that she was a faculty member at the University of Tennessee (1982-2002) and assistant dean in the Graduate School (1997-2001); associate dean in the Graduate School at Northwestern University (2002-2005); and associate dean for PhD programs at Columbia University (2005-2012). She received her PhD in child development from Purdue University, her master’s from the University of Oklahoma, and her bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Baptist University. Jan’s current research and writing focuses on children’s political socialization, children’s cognitive understanding of and emotional responses to stress, graduate student mentoring and professional development, and graduate student academic and research ethics.

Faculty and students are encouraged to nominate our valuable campus community members for awards.

The awards will be announced at the Graduate Studies Reception.

The Division of Graduate Studies is pleased to accept nominations from faculty and staff for Outstanding Graduate Student Award for 2019-2020. This award recognizes exceptional student for their significant contributions and accomplishments to their field, program, SUNY Oswego and/or to the community. Graduate nominees must be enrolled in a master’s program or graduate certificate at the time of nomination. The submission should address what distinguishes this graduate student from others.

Outstanding Graduate Student Award Nomination

The Division of Graduate Studies is pleased to accept nominations from graduate students for Outstanding Mentoring Award for 2019-2020. This award recognizes outstanding support of a graduate student by a faculty/staff member. Nominees should exemplify excellence in dedicated mentorship to our graduate students and may include: sound advice, encouraging the best performance, generosity of time and/or assisting students to completion. Graduate students are encouraged to nominate mentors that have made an extraordinary difference in their lives. From these nominations, a committee will select recipients for this calendar year. All nominees will be notified and the winners of the award will be announced during the Graduate Studies Reception during Graduate Week.
