Groups and Workshops

Counseling Services has a wide variety of groups and workshops available to help you navigate difficult or stressful situations. To get more information, sign up to join, or suggest a topic not listed below, please submit our interest form. 

Group Interest Form

Anxiety Tool Box

This 3 session workshop (3 consecutive weeks) teaches you about the anxiety you experience and gives skills to help you to manage it. The workshop has 3 modules dedicated to:

  1. Understanding anxiety
  2. Introducing a method for slowing down and disentangling the experience of anxiety
  3. Developing alternative responses to anxiety

By the end of the workshop, you will have your own individualized plan for managing anxiety. Must attend all 3 sessions.

The Body Project

This is a 4 session group using therapeutic process and behavioral exercises as well as psychoeducation to challenge negative body image and societal appearance ideals and promote psychosocial functioning as well as reduce body dissatisfaction, negative mood, dieting and disordered eating. It is a closed group with 3-10 members. It begins mid semester and runs for 4 weeks. This is a closed group and a brief screening is required.

Crafting Calm: Strategies for Finding Peace

This group is for you if you are looking for new coping strategies for stress, anxiety, and depression. We will use the power of creativity to help you find new ways to tap into calmness, peace, and enjoyment through experimental activities with all kinds of expressive arts, including drawing, painting, sculpting, writing, and music listening. No artistic ability necessary! If you want time away from the pressure of graded school projects, let's de-stress together!

DBT Skills Group

This group is intended to teach DBT skills (mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal skills) to students in a group setting. DBT is an evidence-based treatment that is developmentally appropriate for college-aged students who want to build a life worth living. DBT skills have been proven to be helpful for people with complex needs that want to implement healthier behaviors, relationships, and coping skills.

Dungeons & Therapy

The group will meet 3-4 times for 90 minute sessions where participants will create fantasy characters to role play specific personal therapeutic goals and collaborate with other members to overcome challenges and interact within a shared imaginary world. Growth, challenges, and breakthroughs will be processed at the end of each session. This group requires a brief screening.

Grief and Loss Support Group

The Grief and Loss support group is a counselor-facilitated peer support group for students affected by the death of a loved one. The group is a safe place to learn and share the grief process. Counselor led activities supplement this process.

International Circle

International Circle is a counselors-facilitated peer support group for international students. This group aims to offer a safe environment to discuss shared and/or unique experiences that international students encounter studying at SUNY Oswego. We will have opportunities to become connected and learn how to navigate this transformative change from each other!

This is an open, drop in group. If you know you would like to attend, you can complete the Google form.

Strive to Thrive: Sexual Assault Survivor Support

This is a counselor facilitated support group for students who have experienced abuse and/or assault. Ideal for students who have had previous counseling. This is a closed group and requires a brief screening.

Trans Support Group

The Trans Support Group is a weekly support-based counseling group for students who identify on the trans spectrum. The space is designed for students to give and receive support, help build community and trust, and address concerns related to gender identity. This is an open drop in group, no screening or previous counseling required.

RSS Support Group

Support group for RSS staff members to discuss topics related to residential life, mental health, and holistic well-being. This will be an open, ongoing through the semester style group. This is an open, drop in group for any Residential Student Staff.

Closed Support Group

Support groups are typically closed once the group has started and are important to attend consistently in order to maintain the integrity of the group process. Please call the CSC at 315.312.4416 for more details about these groups or if you are interested in joining.
