GENIUS: Global Environmental Issues - US
OSWEGO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT PROJECT OLYMPIAD
GENIUS Olympiad focuses on all aspects of global environmental issues. The goals of GENIUS Olympiad are:
- to enable high school students to cope with environmental problems and to elicit their abilities to produce solutions.
- to inspire high school students to contribute to the protection and improvement of the environment.
- to equip young generations with environmental consciousness.
- to provide a forum for youth to come together and share ideas.
- to inform the public about global environmental problems.
A GENIUS has:
- the affection for all humanity.
- the wisdom for all.
- the high sense of responsibility for the society s/he lives in and for the world.
- the introspect for the values s/he believes in, and acts accordingly with passion.
- The Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad is open to all Oswego County students studying in grades 9 through 12 (or the equivalent).
- In all aspects of projects, the participants must maintain integrity.
- Participants must avoid any misconduct or fraud, such as falsifying data or records, and piracy or plagiarism (presenting the work of another person's as one's own).
- A maximum of two students may present a project.
- All students must attend the Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad with an adult supervisor (a teacher or a parent).
The Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad will be held during the SUNY Oswego Earth Day Expo, Wednesday, April 22 (Earth Day) from 9:30 am to 3 pm. Check-in will commence at 9:30 am and setup must be completed by 10:30 am. Registration must be submitted online by March 17.
Judging Committee has the right to deny any project without explanation. Projects which do not submit or register on time shall be disqualified.
All students are required to adhere to the rules set by the GENIUS Olympiad, and these rules may change without any notification.
Dress code is business casual for all participants and judges. (no shorts or jeans)
RULES FOR COMPETITORS
The research paper should include: title, student names, school, city and country, abstract, introduction, goal of the project, methods and experiments, results and discussions, conclusion and references. Recommended page limit is 15, with acceptable font sizes 11 or 12 for any font type and page margins one inch or more (2.5 cm) from each side.
You will present your project as a poster presentation during the Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad. You are allowed to bring demos or prototypes to present as part of your presentation. Project set-up deadline is 10:30 am Tuesday, April 22, 2014. You may begin set-up at 9:30 am that day in the concourse between the Richard S. Shineman Center for Science and Park Hall.
The size of your poster cannot be bigger than 40 (h) x 60 (w) inches (100 [h] x 150 [w] cm) size. It is recommended to be between 30-38 (h) x 48-54 (w) inches (75-95 cm x 125-130 cm). The poster should include at least the following sections: introduction, goal, results and discussion, conclusion,and references. Projects will be provided a 40x60" (100x150cm) empty display area and a 30x60" (45x150cm) table, with a 40x60" (100x150cm) white foam board, if needed. You are allowed to bring your own display board. You may bring your existing paper copies, trifold or large print boards which can be taped onto the provided foam board or placed on the table. A table will be provided for every project to have display demos and prototypes. Electric outlets (110 volts) will be provided on request. Pins and tape will be provided by Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad.
Students are advised (not required) to bring multiple copies of their final research paper to distribute to curious viewers. Students should come to the competition with pre-printed materials to prepare their posters. Don't forget to bring electronic copies of your documents on a flash drive. If something goes wrong, you will need the electronic copies to get printouts.
The following items will not be allowed for display: microbial cultures or fungi (live or dead); displays of live animals, preserved vertebrate animals, whether in whole or part (this includes humans); open or concealed flames, matches or lighters; hazardous chemicals; highly combustible solids, fluids or gases; sharp items (syringes, needles, knives); controlled substances; and radioactive materials.
Proper procedures must be followed in regard to human subjects. When human subjects are used in research (including survey research), they have to be fully informed of any risks and have to give consent to the procedures, in possession of full knowledge of the risks (this is known as informed consent). Informed consent should be obtained for all minors and for adults when more than minimal risk is involved in participating in the project. Minimal risk is defined as the probability of harm or discomfort anticipated in the research.

Every participant will receive a GENIUS certificate for their ambition and participation. Four tiers of awards will be given according to student's total score:
- Gold Medal - 1 project
- Participant(s) receive a gold medal, a first place prize and will be automatically accepted into the International GENIUS Olympiad at SUNY Oswego, which includes a five-night stay on campus, trip to Niagara Falls with other GENIUS winners world-wide, various other activities and chances to win prizes ranging from MP3 players and Tablets to SUNY Oswego scholarships.
- High school will receive a $2,000 grant to be used towards a sustainability project in their school's science program.
- Silver Medal - 2 projects
- Participant(s) will receive a silver medal and a second place prize
- Bronze Medal - 2 projects
- Participant(s) will receive a bronze medal and a third place prize
- Honorable Mention - Participants will receive a certificate of honorable mention.
GENIUS Science: Provides understanding and solutions to environmental problems using scientific knowledge. Students are expected to present a solution using scientific methods for a problem which fits in one of the following categories:
SCIENCE | Environmental Quality
The category of Environmental Quality encompasses the study of assessing, analyzing, and providing solutions to the problems of environmental pollution-such as air, water, soil, and noise pollution-and their potential effects on the health of all organisms, including humans. The world around us changes all the time. How is our quality of life affected by the environment?
Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad seeks solutions to problems related to indoor and outdoor air quality; the health effects of air, water, soil, radiation, and noise pollution; pollution management (e.g., systems for early warning or control of polluting incidents); the measurement of pollution; waste water treatment and remediation; solid waste treatment and remediation; the effects of radiation; and more.
SCIENCE | Ecology and Biodiversity
The category of Ecology and Biodiversity encompasses the study of plant and animal populations, plant and animal communities, the network of relations among organisms. How do organisms relate to their environment and food sources, at both large and small scales?
Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad seeks solutions to problems related to the movement of food, resources, and energy through living communities; the assessment of the value of the local ecosystems; the effects of populations on ecosystems (e.g., excessive fishing, excessive farming); the destruction of habitat and its effects on the health of living organisms, including humans; genetic pollution and hybridization and their effects on food security and biodiversity; the effects of climate change on biodiversity; the distribution and abundance of organisms; and more.
SCIENCE | Resource and Energy
The category of Resources and Energy encompasses the study of energy sources, such as mineral, water, wood, coal, oil, gas, nuclear, wind, sun, and soil sources, including efforts to increase their efficiency in producing energy and to reduce the impact of their use on the environment. How do we use these resources? How can we do it better?
Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad seeks solutions to problems related to responsible use of non-renewable natural resources; efficient use of non-renewable natural sources (e.g., in energy and goods production); the contribution of non-renewable natural sources to global warming; the efficient use of renewable natural sources (e.g., in energy and goods production); soil degradation, erosion, and remediation; the efficient use of water resources, and more.
SCIENCE | Human Ecology
The category of Human Ecology encompasses the study of the relationship between humans and their natural, social, and built environments, the effects of environmental changes on human behavior, and the effects of human behavior on the environment. The world of humans is inextricably connected with the environment. How are human interactions changing over time? How are those changes related to the environment?
Oswego County GENIUS Olympiad seeks solutions to problems related to society and its knowledge about sustainability; socials changes that affect the environment; social justice in regard to food and water supplies; social justice in regard to access to education and quality of life; education about the environment and sustainability; the business and economy of sustainability; sustainable engineering and construction; society and energy usage; developing a sustainable low-waste society; social behavior involving recycling, reuse, and waste reduction programs; social views about environmental regulations, policies and programs; and more.
