Admission to Oswego is based upon the applicant’s academic and personal qualifications and is made without regard to sex, race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation or physical disability. Oswego seeks men and women of ability and promise who have the capacity for intellectual growth and the motivation to achieve. Freshmen and transfer students who seek information on admission to the college or wish to schedule a visit to the SUNY Oswego should call the Admissions Office at 315.312.2250. Further information is available at our website.
Admission to the BA programs
Students admitted to Oswego qualify for acceptance into one of the three BA degree programs: no additional application processes are required. Students in the BA studio art degree are assigned to the studio art or graphic design tracks by a department advisor during their freshmen advisement program. Transfer students are assigned to the studio art or graphic design track by a department advisor during their summer orientation program.
Admission to the BFA programs
If you are applying or transferring into one of the two BFA degree programs you are required to submit a portfolio for review by the faculty of the Art Department. In addition to this, you must submit a statement of intent, an annotated work list, an application form and copies of your transcripts. Students seeking admission for one of our BFA programs need to demonstrate that they possess an aptitude for hard work as evidenced by a well-crafted portfolio, exemplary academic performance (preferably 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher) and writing skills. Transfer students with associate degrees in art or graphic design are strongly encouraged to apply for acceptance in a BFA program before matriculating at Oswego. Transfer students without associate degrees in art or graphic design should apply before attending Oswego if they have 24 hours or more in art. Students without associate degrees may apply a second time for acceptance; students with associate degrees are given only one chance to apply to one of our BFA programs.
Coming to Oswego as a freshman
Freshmen are strongly encouraged to attend Oswego as BA majors and apply for the BFA during their sophomore year. This allows students time to understand the demands of the program and to build a portfolio for admission. Students who come in as freshmen are given two opportunities to apply for a BFA program and are strongly advised to work with an advisor before submitting the visual and written material in their application. If a student is denied admission into a BFA program twice, he or she must make alternative study plans at Oswego. Academic advisors are able to assist students in this situation.
Coming to Oswego as a transfer student
Note: There are separate guidelines for transfer students with and without degrees. Also, no more than 24 hours of studio art/graphic design credit may be transferred into the BA program and no more than 36 hours of studio art, graphic design or art history credit may be transferred into the BFA program.
Transfer students without an associate degree in art or graphic design
If you are a transfer student with more than 24 semester hours of college credit, you do not need to submit your high school transcripts. If you do not feel prepared to apply for the BFA immediately, you may declare a BA degree and apply for a BFA program after matriculating at Oswego. Entrance into the BFA program is not guaranteed and you must submit your portfolio before you have earned more than 30 semester hours in studio art or graphic design. You may submit your portfolio a second time if you fail to gain admission on your first try. Applicants that have been declined twice must make alternative study plans at Oswego. Academic advisors are able to assist students in this situation. A transfer student who has more than 24 hours in art upon matriculating at SUNY Oswego and who is denied admission into the BFA program may attend Oswego as a BA major, but he or she will not be able to transfer in more than 24 hours in art.
Transfer students with AA, AS or AAS degrees in studio art or graphic design
If you are a transfer student with AA, AS or AAS degrees in studio art/graphic design you are strongly encouraged to apply to the BFA programs prior to coming to Oswego since entrance to Oswego does not guarantee entrance into a BFA program. You may only apply once to the BFA program and should be prepared to make alternative study plans if acceptance is denied. Some students who are rejected from the BFA choose to complete the BA degree instead. However, a student can not transfer in more than 24 hours of studio art, graphic design or art history credit towards the BA degree.
