John Searle was born in Denver, Colorado in 1932. He has a Ph.D. in 
philosophy from Oxford, and is currently a professor of philosophy at UC 
Berkeley.
Searle is best known for his critique of computationalism, theory of 
intentionallity, and his work on the problem of consciousness. Searle has 
written many papers some of which include "Speech Acts: An Essay in the 
Philosophy of Language" and "Minds, Brains, and Programs".
