John Searle was born in Denver, Colorado in 1932. He has a Ph.D. in philosophy from Oxford, and is currently a professor of philosophy at UC Berkeley. Searle is best known for his critique of computationalism, theory of intentionallity, and his work on the problem of consciousness.
