1)Animal Minds Minds are only said to be possessed by humans. Griffin has been noted to have done much work in the area concerning animal minds and has developed a theory. His theory asked three questions: Can animals be conscious? Can animals be self-aware? and Can animals have rational minds? 2)Communication Amoung Animals Much of the language used between animals is clearly instinctive and genetically explained. Evidence of animals cooperating in tasks(hunting) would make one feel that there is communication between animals. 3)"Tool Useage" At one time tool useage was a characteristic of our species but other species have been noted with using primitive tools when studied. It has also been noted that animals have to learn to use the tools. Humans also learn to use tools and when they do they consciously know what they are doing. Therefore animals my have to have some sort of consciousness to know how to use a tool. 4))Inventive Behavior - This is a kind of behavior that happens rarely, such as a raven dropping a stone on a person 5)7)Animal Language - True language words and their reference should be interchangeable. Some animals can take in the effect of syntax while others can not. 6) Rational Animals - Abilities of animals to pick out certain symetrical objects yields the question whether they are rational or not. A chimp that can dinsitguish a trinagle from two squares suggest that rationality in humans had its roots in the animal world. Its probably better viewd as a matter of degree. 7)self-awarness - Animals who aren't self aware, if looking into a mirror, would think that there was another animal infront of them. A self aware animal would see the image of one of istelf. The only animals, other then humans, who are self awared are chimpanzees and orangutans. 8)Inherited Templates Genetically programmed behavior that is inherited by members of a species. 9)Mechanistic alternative Animal behavior is adequately explained by genetic instructions conveyed by DNA and modeled by natural selection. 10)Adaptability to changing circumstances Every animal adapts to its surroundings to some degree. That shows some intelligence.
