The American alternative rock-and-roll magazine, Ray Gun was first published in 1992. Led by founding art director David Carson, Ray Gun explored experimental typographic design. The result was a distinctive chaotic, not always readable, abstract style.

Carson was perhaps the most influential graphic designer of the nineties. In particular, his widely imitated style defined the so-called "grunge" era.
