The Center believes that early exposure to urban schools through field placements encourages pre-service teachers to explore opportunities within urban areas, such as Syracuse or New York City.  These experiences will lead to a greater number of students performing their student teaching in an urban school.  These field placements and student teaching experiences then create a career pathway whereby a higher percentage of SUNY Oswego graduates actively search for and obtain teaching positions in urban and/or "high needs" schools.  These are the goals of SUNY Oswego's Center for Urban Schools.

The Center For Urban Schools at SUNY Oswego seeks to establish and foster this connection in  hopes of developing the potential of teachers and students as well as encouraging social change.  In order to provide New York's urban schools with an appropriate number of qualified teachers, the Center believes it is important to recruit urban students for the School of Education.  People who have lived in or are from an urban setting have a greater likelihood of returning to the schools in their community. 

The New York State Education Department and NCATE  require that SUNY Oswego School of Education graduates have a placement experience in schools that are considered "high needs" and are rich in ethnic/cultural diversity.  These expectations call for a greater connection between SUNY Oswego and New York State's urban schools.

With its commitment to teaching for social justice, the School of Education at SUNY Oswego seeks to establish a presence in those schools where student poverty rates are the highest, student diversity is the norm not the exception, educational resources are extremely scarce, and where student achievement as well as teacher availability are the lowest; namely New York State's urban schools.
