Day 1

Depart for Costa Rica. Fly overnight to the capital, San Jose. Note: Depending on the flight schedule, accommodations for the first night may be in San Jose. The transfer to Ecolodge will be the following morning.
 

Days 2-6 - Cabo Blanco

Five nights accommodation at the San Miguel Biological Station in bunkhouses. Three meals provide daily

Daily course lectures from local researchers to be provided - topics to include local environment plant life, insects, climate, marine life, etc. Lectures will be tailored to level of students participating Program activities include: Lectures, lab research, service learning projects, guided hikes, slide shows visits to other local projects, volunteer research participation, hands-on farm activities

Optional activities include: Motor launch excursions, night hikes, guided snorkeling

Transfer to the Ecolodge San Luis & Biological Station in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve area. The route is

    • Cabo Blanco to Malpais on foot
    • Malpais to Paquera via bus or taxi
    •  Paquera to Puntarenas via ferry 
    •  Puntarenas to Ecolodge San Luis via bus
The journey time is approximately four to six hours

Davs 7-11 - Monte Verde

Two nights accommodations at the Ecolodge San Luis Biological Station in bunkhouses and three night with local host families within 20 minutes walking distance to the station. Three meais provided daily

Daily course lectures from local researchers to be provided - topics to include local environment, plant life insects, climate, marine life, etc. Lectures will be tailored to level of students participating

Program activities inctude One day in the Monteverde reserve to include 1) a guided hike through the Santa Elena Reserve of aerial canopy walk or 2) a guided visit of the Butterfly Farm A full day excursion to Arenal Volcano including transportation, guides and lunch Ecolodge activities include lab research, service learning projects, slide shows,visits to other local projects, volunteer research participation, hands-on farm activities, guided nature hikes,bird-watching, observation of noctumal creatures and cultural and social events with members of the community

Optional activities include: Hiking, swimming, horseback riding and volleyball

Day 12

Transfer to San Jose and overnight in a hotel before the early morning transfer to Tortuguero.
 

Day 13

Transfer from San Jose to Hamburgo dock via bus. Then board a boat for a river cruise to Tortuguero National Park. Journey time is approximately four hours.

Day 13-15 - Tortuguero

Three nights accommodations at the Jungle Lodge (or similar). Three meals are provided daily.

Program activities include:

    •  A guided exploration of the Tortuguero Beach and hike to Cerro  
    •  A visit to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation for an educational exchange with the local researchers.
    •  A guided boat expedition of the Tortuguero canals lagoons and creeks.

Day 16

Transfer to San Jod via riverboat and bus. The journey time is approximately four hours. Overnight in San Jose.

Dav 17

Transfer to the airport for the return flight to the U.S.
