Course materials:

·         Calculus: Concepts and Contexts (or Single-variable calculus: Concepts and Contexts) by James Stewart, 3rd edition

·         Graphing Calculator: TI-89 or Voyage 200.

·         WebAssign account (to submit homework). Directions will be e-mailed to you.

Course Description: Introduction to the differential calculus of functions of one real variable, including limits, continuity, derivatives, and applications. Also a brief introduction to the integral calculus.

Pre-requisites: The pre-requisite for this course is high school Precalculus or Mat 120. I expect you to have solid algebra skills, such as manipulating expressions and solving equations. You should also have a basic understanding of graphs of functions, and be familiar with the graphs of some common functions.

You are expected to spend, on average, 8 hours a week outside class on Calculus. In particular, you should:

·         Read the appropriate section in the textbook before that section is discussed in class. (See calendar on the class website.) At this time you should try to get a general idea of the section’s material. Write down the main idea, new vocabulary, formulas if appropriate. Read over the solved examples and look over the exercises. Write down any questions you might have about the section.

·         Come to class prepared. Bring your notes and questions with you. Be on time, since a very short “quiz” will be given in the beginning of class. You should complete it as soon as you get in.

·         After class, you should re-read the appropriate section in the book and then do homework. Keep in mind that some homework questions may be routine exercises but others will be more challenging and new. Problem solving is an important part of learning calculus.

Grading system:

Weekly quizzes              100 pts

Midterms                        300   (100 each.)

Final                               150   (Common final is given on Monday, 8-10 a.m.)

Selected homework         50
Attendance                      30

Grade cut-offs: A 93%, A- 90%, B+ 87%, B 83%, B- 80%, C+77%, C 73%, C-70% etc.

Homework problems are of 3 types:

All assigned problems will be the basis for quizzes and exams, i.e. exams and quizzes will contain problems of similar type. The homework grade will be determined by the first two types. Please note that the homework grade carries a very low weight, and what ultimately counts is what you have learned from it.

Attendance will be scored as follows: First 3 absences no penalty; 4-6 absences, 2 points off each, thereafter 4 points off each.

Missed exams: If you must miss an exam for a valid, documented reason (family emergency, school-sponsored event, illness) you must contact me before the exam to make alternate arrangements. A make-up test will be given as soon as possible after the regularly scheduled one. In no circumstances will an exam be given early.

Miscellaneous

·         All cell phones are to be turned off and put away during class.

·         If you have a disabling condition which may interfere with your ability to successfully complete this course, please contact the Disability Services Office.

·         Intellectual integrity on the part of all students is basic to individual growth and development through college course work. When academic dishonesty occurs, the teaching/learning climate is seriously undermined and student growth and development are impeded. For these reasons, any form of intellectual dishonesty is a serious concern and is therefore prohibited. The full policy can be found at
