Richard Metzgar
Assistant Professor and Foundations Coordinator

Richard is a cross-media artist who works with painting, printmaking, photography, digital video, audio, and installation. His research interests include exploring indeterminacy through the use of scores, the diagrammatic as an image building methodology, and investigating the idea of “intensities”.

Richard has been the recipient of [five] New York Foundation for the Arts Special Opportunity Stipends and has been awarded travel grants for research in Montreal, Taipei, and Vancouver. He has exhibited work in the Everson Biennial (2004,1998) at the Everson Museum of Art and at Shippensburg University, Pennsylvania School of Art and Design, Monroe Community College, Chautauqua Center for the Visual Arts, Rochester Contemporary (formerly Pyramid Arts Center), Amos Eno Gallery, Visual Studies Workshop, Pleiades Gallery, The Cooper Union, and the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester.

Parallel to his individual pursuits, Richard is interested in the process and potential of collaboration and has worked as a member of the collaborative Bartow + Metzgar since 1999. Bartow + Metzgar have created installations at Wells College, Keuka College, and Maryland Art Place among others. Forthcoming exhibitions are scheduled at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo (June 2005) and Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, Grand Rapids, MI (October 2005). Richard also participates in collaborative projects as a member of the art/architectural collective spurse. Recent installations have been mounted as part of the exhibitions The Interventionists:  Art in the Social Sphere, MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA, Living Green: Examining Sustainability, Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College of Art, Portland, sprawl, 250 Hudson + Broome, New York, and The Brewster Project: WHAT IS TO BE DONE?, Brewster, NY.
