MAT in Art Education Information Sheet
The MAT in Art Education is meant to serve those persons who hold a BFA or equivalent degree and who now desire to attain teacher certification K-12 in Art. This is coordinated with the Master's degree program and would require 36 hours of graduate level coursework to fulfill the programmatic requirements. The following issues are addressed for potential applicants: Students must fulfill certain requirements for State Ed to be eligible for certification. Note: We offer a degree, State Ed offers certification! Therefore, to fulfill State Ed. requirements in 1) Ed. Psych - the coursework will be embedded within the Art Ed Methods course as it is fundamental to teach about the developmental stages of children and their art products. By embedding this requirement within coursework, we will save the student 3 hrs of UG coursework. 2) Drug & child abuse (typically HSC 241) must be taken at an undergraduate numbered course. Possibly a distance learning course will meet this need. Or, BOCES often offers such a workshop culminating with a certificate for approx. $20.00 3) The Specific Art Education Methods course will be a 6 credit course. 3 hrs of it will be an urban elementary field experience that will function as a component of their student teaching requirement, since art teacher certification is for K-12. 4) The main student teaching experience will be for 6 graduate credits in a secondary school to be supervised by Art Education faculty or School of Ed faculty, or in consultation with Art Faculty as desired. In addition to student teaching, an action research paper must be submitted for a grade at the end of the experience. 5) Art History foundation must be in place upon admittance to the program. If applicant has less than 9hrs of art history, they will be required to take additional courses to meet these minimum standards, in addition to program requirements. 6) To be admitted to the program, students must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or take the GRE's. All applicants must submit a portfolio of 10 slides of recent work, 1/2 of which are to be in sphere of interest, and the other 1/2 to indicate versatility in media use. Public school art teachers must be able to teach all media that are available to their programs, and mandated by the state art syllabus. To apply: contact the Dept. of Graduate Studies at SUNY Oswego, and request that an application packet be mailed to you. The application will be reviewed by the Art Education Faculty of the Dept. of Curriculum & Instruction in conjunction with the Fine Art Faculty.
