OYSA Travel League Program Policies

(Final Copy 1.28.05)

The OYSA Travel Program was created to identify and advance the most talented and passionate youth soccer players in Oswego. The Travel Program promotes the development of soccer skills, teamwork and sportsmanship through team selection and competitions.

All OYSA travel players are to be selected on the basis of open tryouts. Tryouts will be held in late summer/early fall. These tryouts are conducted by OYSA coaches who are recognized for their ability to identify and train players who wish to develop their technical ability in a more structured environment. Players are evaluated on the four components that make up a soccer player:

  • Technique
  • Tactics
  • Fitness and Athletic Ability
  • Psychological Component (attitude)
The OYSA currently places these teams in CNYJSA, which is affiliated with NYS West and US Youth Soccer. This league plays games throughout Central New York. League play begins in late April and continues through early August. Games are usually during a weeknight and OYSA teams will practice an addition 1-2 times per week. The OYSA also encourages out travel teams to attend tournaments, this usually involves 1-2 Tournaments held on weekends.

It is the goal of OYSA to place teams at the following levels for both boys and girls:

  • U10
  • U12
  • U14
  • U16
  • U19
The number of teams formed for a given age is dependent upon the numbers of qualified players at tryouts and upon the availability of qualified and approved Coaches. Rosters are set based on player ability and skill as determined by the Coaches. Each team will play at the highest level of play possible for the talent on the team. If the numbers are such that an U11, U13, etc. would provide better opportunities for our players, OYSA will try to support teams in these age groups.

We expect that the majority of players will play on age. The three possible exceptions to this will be:

  1. A player is in the State Select team (ODP) pool.
  2. Players who are actively playing in a more select club.
    • A select club team is a team that participates in the Upstate New York Premier league, Region 1 Directors League or Super Y-League.
  3. The player is identified by the Director of Coaching and Travel Coordinator as a player who can and should .play up. for that season.
The OYSA travel program is headed up by a group of coaches who will be appointed by the Travel Coordinator and the Director of Coaching. The coaches will be announced at the August Meeting of the board (beginning in 2005), and will be primarily responsible for the selection and development of their team from September through to the following August.
