Overview:  It seems that every time you turn around some big company has put out another technological development that will change the way live in this world.  As teachers, this news can either be very frightening, as we fear losing touch with students growing up in a world completely different than our own, or empowering, as harness this technology to strengthen our teaching.  This course has helped me with the everyday technology a teacher faces, from Microsoft word to Spreadsheet, to the many benefits of a good PowerPoint presentation, and finally to the world wide web.

Title: Word Processing

Description: This assignment required the development of a lesson plan in Microsoft Word format.  We were asked to include at least one image while paying attention to format, style, and font to create an aesthetically pleasing and functional plan.

Reflection:  As an artist, I like to have everything I create look visually appealing.  Even though have been using Word Processing for quite some time now, I have always been frustrated with what happens when you try to add a picture to a text document.  It was very helpful for me to learn about the ‘text wrapping’ function so that I can better incorporate my images and text.

Title: Spreadsheet

Description: For this assignment we were to design an evaluation/assessment tool using Excel.  The final project had to include a formula, function, and or a chart to analyze and illustrate data.

Reflection: I chose to create a grade book for the completion of this assignment.  It was very helpful for me to learn how to use formulas to average out scores on projects and assignments.  As a teacher it is important to be both accurate with your student’s grade and efficient with you time.

Title: PowerPoint

Description: For this assignment the class no longer worked individually, but broke up into small groups to put together a PowerPoint presentation to be shared with the rest of the class.  We were assessed on the organization, use of visuals, clarity, and mastery of the subject matter.  We were also expected to use slide transitions and hyperlinks in effective ways.

Reflection: My group and decided to combine our expertise by creating an art history presentation on Renaissance art and culture.  With a history and two art teachers, we were able to clearly convey how social and political developments changed the art world.  We created an assignment for our prospective students by using hyperlinks to connect them to important websites on the subject of the Renaissance and of portraiture.  While I generally like to keep my PowerPoints as simple as possible, it was very helpful to learn about all of the different things I can incorporate while teaching.

Title: Website Design

Description: For this assignment we designed our own website using Microsoft Front Page and WebQuest.  WebQuest has a user-friendly format for teachers that includes a page for the introduction, task, process, evaluation, conclusion, and finally, a teacher page.  We were asked to create a website using one of our own lessons or units using this format.

Reflection: This was the most useful project assignment for me.  I had no former instruction on creating my own website, but always thought that it was an important tool for teachers.  I definitely will utilize website production in my own classroom to create a way for students and parents to interact with the art room even after school is out for the day.  I think this will be an easy way for parents to get involved with what is happening in my classroom in that they can access my website in their own home.  I am very excited to put this to use in the future.
