Course Description

SOE 345/545 Applied Instructional Technologies for Educators is an activity-based, laboratory-oriented course for education majors consisting of hands-on exercises using hardware, software and operating systems commonly used in educational and professional environments. Students will research, develop, teach, and collaborate on professional topics; evaluate presentations; use word processing, draw and/or paint, spreadsheet, and database management; utilize current interactive networking systems; and critically evaluate educational software and hardware relative to specific grade levels and/or subject matter areas.

Major Topics (subject to change)

Operating computers (Mac and PC)
Meaning of computer related terms
Word processing and writing
Communicating with graphics
Desktop publishing
Preparing and using slide shows
Developing inquiry skills with database (optional)
Problem solving with spreadsheets
Telecommunications: educational web design and development
Integrating technology into the curriculum

Textbook

Yang, H.; Miller, S. (2002). Applied Educational Technology: Learning by Understanding, Doing, and Reflecting Productivity Tools. North Chelmsford, MA: Erudition Books.

You will need 2 or 3 disks for this class. You should always carry them with you.

Requirements

Regular class attendance (minus 1 point for each absence, or 0.5 hrs late).
Lab practice (3 or more hours per week in this lab or other computer labs in campus).
Present assignment on time (1 point will be deducted for every day [not class day] an assignment is late).
Do major projects.

30 pts        Attendance and Participation
30 pts        Individual Assignments (15 pts ea.)
20 pts        Individual or Group Web Project
20 pts        Group Presentation Project

100 pts      Total
