Oravita is situated in the district of Caras-Severin, Romania, very close to the parallel 45.

Oravita (pronounced Oravitza) is a small town with a big heart. Like most of the Banat region, this town has an extremenly diverse population whose centuries old tolerant attitude towards religious expression and ethnic origin makes it a model of "melting pot" long before the United States became one.

Situated at the base of Anina Mountains, the city benefits of magnificent landscapes. As a teenager, I often made short trips in the surrounding hills, went to swim in naturally warm waters at Ciclova Montana or took long hiking trips on the Cheile Nerei. Very little exploited touristically, the natural beauty of the region remains almost intact.

The history of Oravita from this webpage was compiled by two eminent intellectuals: Doctor Ioan Cretiu, whose life and career marked the town's history in many ways, and Preot Virgil Fecheta, the enthousiast priest of the Romano-Catholic Church. We hope to have soon an English version of this site and share with the world the valuable contributions of Oravita's dedicated intellectuals.
