The Calamus River flows within the Sandhills Region of Nebraska. During the Holocene, the Sandhills Region was covered with actively migrating sand dunes. Today the dunes are covered with grasses that support grazing livestock.

Studies of the deposits in and around a low-sinuosity reach of the Calamus were studied during 1983-1984. From 1984-1986 studies of flow, sediment transport, and bedform geometry and migration around a midstream island were conducted. The reach that was the focus of these studies is indicated on the map.
