(Students will select a minimum of three for the semester)
The Annotated Francophone Cookbook: Students
will research the cuisine of several French-speaking countries, searching
for recipes and evidence through food of the interaction of cultures and
geographies. The assignment for this module will be the creation of a
Web-page of recipes organized by region with cultural and historical
annotations for each of the countries featured. Auxiliary Services will
serve a special meal consisting of selections from the cookbook in the
campus dining halls as part of the Project 2000 activities.

A Cross-Cultural Examination of Sports (soccer and
basketball): Students will subscribe to sports listservs in
various countries and participate in a virtual reality international MOO in
search of evidence of the role of sports in socialization, the family,
politics, and the media in the US and francophone cultures.

Tahiti: From Art to the Atom Bomb:Students will
learn about the influence of Polynesia on French art from Gaughin to the
present and explore the political and ecological ramifications of the
French government's decision to test atomic bombs in this region.

Caribbean Creole: Music, Song, and Dance:
Students will familiarize themselves with the music of the
French-speaking Caribbean, exploring the influence of French and native
languages, jazz and African rhythm and providing a Web site cataloguing
available CDs and albums which illustrate the interconnections of these
arts, languages, and cultures.

The French Vietnam in Literature and Film:
Students will correspond electronically with Vietnamese students, read
novels and view films chronicling the French experience of Indochine,
later the site of the American-Vietnam War, reporting the results of
their research via a Web site and / or collaborative writing document.

The Self Under Siege: Racism and Sexism in the
Francophone World: Students will explore the writings of
such major figures as Frantz Fanon and Marguerite Duras and conduct an
on-line dialogue of personal and theoretical reactions and reflections to
their controversial work.

Flora and Fauna of the Francophone World:
Students will explore the diversity of plant and animal life in selected
francophone countries using Web resources to identify and describe their
location and variation around the world.

City: Metaphor, Myth, and Market: Students will conduct
research on several major francophone cities (e.g. Paris, Montreal,
Dakar, Algiers, New Orleans) and create a web site exploring the role of
trade and travel in the cities, from structure and location to language,
folklore and housing.

Media and Markets: Students will explore doing
business in francophone countries with an emphasis on the role of the
media (including electronic media) in the development and expansion of
markets. Students will have limited access to the French Minitel
network, precursers of the modern Internet in marketing and communication
systems. Students will also examine issues of intellectual property
across cultures in the information age.

Public and Private: Religion and Politics in the
Francophone World: Students will select countries from various
regions with different religious and political systems and explore the
effects of colonization and local traditions and systems on the public
and private spheres (e.g. the history and evolution of Algeria) using Web
resources, email and listservs.

will examine the province of Quebec and its multicultural existence
within Canada and in dialogue with native peoples as it confronts North
American realities other-wise than in English. Students will prepare a
Web site introducing the American college student to the diversity of Quebec.
