New Money Available for:
Science, Math & Technology Related Curriculum Development
New funding from the National Science Foundation will be available in
summer 1999 (three year grant) for enhancing science, math & technology
(SM&T) instruction at SUNY Oswego. Faculty who teach humanities, social
science, business or education courses with significant attention to SM&T
topics are eligible for funding, as well as faculty who teach SM&T
courses.
Faculty will receive stipends and money to purchase teaching materials.
In addition . they will attend a series of workshops to be held during the
second summer sessions (May 18-21st, 1999).
The summer workshops will focus on practical ways to enhance student
opportunities for:
-Active learning, especially in lecture courses
-Non-cookbook, direct experiences with inquiry &
Problem-solving, in lecture & laboratory courses
-Understanding the major organizing concepts in
SM&T, not just learning sequential facts
-Understanding real world applications of SM&T
Concepts
-Collaboration among student & faculty.
This program is designed to help faculty change existing courses or
develop new ones, especially in conjunction with the new General Education
Program. Creative, collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches-for
example, terms of faculty from the same department working on related
courses or pairs of faculty teaching complementary courses in different
departments-are a high priority.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE. Stipends up to $1,000 per team member and funding
for the materials up to$1,000 per courses will be available. Proposal
guidelines and evaluation criteria will be somewhat different from the
normal Faculty Enhancement Curriculum & Program Development Program. More
information will be available later this semester Application deadline is
February 12, 1999.
