America's Unluckiest Logician
Robert Irwin
Computer Science

Emil L. Post was first, or almost first, or could claim to be first, with several groundbreaking ideas in logic/math/computer science. Unfortunately, he was considered scooped, or overshadowed, by more famous monster brains (Godel and Turing) pursuing similar goals. We'll outline the wonderful ideas and depressing career of this seminal figure.

Operations At Bishop's Commons: An Assistive Living Facility
Jennifer Hawley
Sociology

Operations at Bishop's Commons was a qualitative study done at the Bishop's Commons Assitive Living Facility in Oswego, NY to describe and explain the role structure of those involved in the management of the facility. At BishopÆs Commons I described and explained how this assistive living facility functions. This was done by means of observation of the facility, interaction with the residents and staff, and interviewing residents and staff of BishopÆs Commons. It was found that the role structure of this facility is mostly defined by job description of each staff member and by what is needed by the residents. These roles are key in the operations of the facility.

Peer Tutoring As A Pre-Referral Intervention
Marilyn Korth
Counseling and Psychological Services

Research demonstrates that literacy difficulties and the identification of learning disabilities occur more frequently with children in urban environments compared to children in other environments (Greenwood et al, 2001). It is essential to provide academic interventions to these children prior to the point of failure and/or referral to special education. Research reveals that these interventions need baseline and intervention data, treatment integrity checks, and evaluation/assessment of change (Flugum & Reschly, 1994). A cross-age peer tutoring program was developed and established in a nearby urban school district. Procedures will be discussed and data presented.

Heart Follows Head: Influencing Violence-Related Attitudes In The Classroom
Pamela Brand
Psychology

To examine possible changes in students' violence-related attitudes and beliefs, 145 undergraduates completed the Violence-Related Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (V-RABS) at the beginning and end of a course on violence. As expected, support for the death penalty, punishment, and catharsis decreased significantly, as did belief in an association between mental illness and violence; belief in environmental influences increased significantly. Consistent with previous research, these results confirm that college curricula may influence students' attitudes and beliefs.

Malawian Attitudes Toward Female Condoms
Abigail Stamm
Communication Studies

This study reflects my work as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Malawi addressing health issues. It involves the United Nations Population Fund's project to empower women and combat the spread of HIV/AIDS by using female condoms. My study assessed local attitudes toward female condom use, provided educational sessions as to the value of female condoms, and then further assessed the attitudes before and after participants tried them. One of the conclusions of my study was that birth control, rather than the spread of HIV/AIDS, was the most acceptable reason for Malawians to use condoms.

Constructing A First-Year Student Self-Efficacy Scale
Kyle Emich
Psychology

The current study involves constructing a college student self-efficacy scale (ETSS) that measures both students self-efficacy towards successfully completing college and towards pursuing goals after college. A 22-item survey was completed by 478 undergraduates, a Pearson correlation revealed a .476 correlation between self-efficacy and self-esteem. Then, principle components analysis with varimax rotation extracted four principle components accounting for 65.2% of the variance. The components have CronbachÆs alphaÆs of .876, .821, .849, and .729 respectively.

Career Management For A Shifting Job Market
Robert Casper, Robert Schell
Student Affairs

The economy of the 21st century will require workers who are lifelong learners, who can respond and adapt to change, have strong communication skills, demonstrate honesty/integrity, and display a strong work ethic, and sound teamwork skills. Career success will depend as much on the development of desirable personal qualities as on the skills and knowledge of a college graduate. At the same time the knowledge economy is changing the way people work. Graduates can expect to experience a succession of jobs in a number of industry sectors during their working lives. They must manage a dynamic career. This is an integrative research project designed to develop adaptations by Career Services professionals and faculty members, not so much in what we do, as in the way we do it.

Making Sense Of Surveys: Mining Data With Decision Trees
Robert Schell
Student Affairs

This study examined the use of regression and decision-tree analysis with the CHAID and CART algorithms to analyze opinion data from several suveys. The purpose of these analyses was to investigate how responsdents' characteristics and experiences affect their perceptions of programs. A data-mining approach identifies the specific aspects of experience that most influence perceptions of crietia variables. This approach goes beyong the simple report of opinion to segment the sample into homogeneous groups with consistent patterns of response. We will discuss the application of these techniques and the interpretation of the results to improve progams.

An Assessment of Communication 210 For Critical Thinking
John Kares Smith
Communication Studies

This paper reflects the assessment of Communication 210: Critical Thinking and Public Speaking, as a vehicle for providing critical thinking experiences and skills. We assessed student speech outlines and student critical reaction papers. However, while it fulfills the Critical Thinking component of General Education, students enrolled in this course are taught primarily through an oral/performative medium. Thus, the written documents may not provide a complete guide to Critical Thinking development. Further, there is the problem of validity and reliability when measuring critical thinking. However, little time or full scholarly expectation that such an assessment should entail.

Deception And Defiance In The Ruling Family Of Flanders
Karen Nicholas
History

In 1205 Jeanne and Marguerite of Constantinople became orphaned minor heirs to Flanders and Hainaut. Young countess Jeanne had to overcome deception and defiance within her family to succeed as a ruler. First, ten-year-old Marguerite eloped against Jeanne's wishes, But Jeanne eventually persuaded her to repudiate her husband and return to Jeanne's court. Then in 1225 a man looking very much like Jeanne's father but having none of his special knowledge claimed to be the deceased count. When Jeanne executed him, many denounced her as a parricide. Jeanne, however, was a capable ruler who overcame both deception and defiance to dominate Flanders and Hainaut.

This presentation will focus on elevated convection, thunderstorms over areas where surface CAPE's are zero and the source for thunderstorm development is away from the affected area. An overview of the dynamical factors and reasons why these types of thunderstorms are dangerous will be presented. An evaluation of the April 18, 2004 elevated thunderstorm outbreak in Western and Central New York shows the formation and danger in this type of convection. There will be an overview of why this happened, how it was and could have been forecasted, and what meteorological factors kept the squall line intact.

X = ?; Media, Pop Culture And The "Generation X" Stereotype
Tim Nekritz
History

Three pop culture phenomena in 1991 -- Douglas Coupland's novel "Generation X," Richard Linklater's cult film "Slackers" and the unexpected success of Nirvana's "grunge" sound -- converged to both announce the arrival of a new generation and codify a new set of stereotypes. Four years later, the hype and hoopla over GenX dissolved. My paper looks at how and why a generation born between 1961 and 1981 suddenly became the most analyzed and reviled group of Americans in the early 1990s, as well as whether the developed stereotypes represented an accurate portrayal of this cohort.

¡Mirada! Learning Spanish...Through The Eyes Of Migrant Workers
Christy Huynh, Xime Castillo-Galvez
Modern Languages and Literatures

SUNY Oswego students participate in a collaborative learning experience that links the classroom with the community. Students enrolled in Spanish classes have the option to take Service Learning, GST 302. Students volunteer at sites that give them the opportunity to improve their Spanish skills and simultaneously they provide much needed services to the community such as tutoring and mentoring Migrant Workers on local farms. Service learning strengthens classroom learning, engages students in service in the community and builds meaningful partnerships between the College and the Oswego Community. Hear about the success of service learning in this instance and learn how all faculty and students may get involved.

Are Leaf-Eating Primates Less Dexterous Than Fruit-Eating Primates?
Sarah Mahan
Biology

Alison Jolly (1985) suggested that primate hand use is a function of both hand anatomy and diet, hypothesizing that leaf-eaters show less manual dexterity than closely related fruit-eaters. I compared the anatomy and behavior of Mandrillus sphinx, fruit-eaters, and Trachypithicus (Trachypithecus) obscurus, leaf-eaters (both family Cercopithicidae) using scientific illustrations of hand movements to explore the relationship between diet and dexterity. Mandrills use thumbs in their power grip. Langurs do not. Both use a precision grip with the thumb opposing the index finger, but mandrills pick up smaller particles than langurs, which prefer the tongue for fine precision work.

At the same time, handheld computing has progressed to such a degree that many users have come to prefer the increased mobility that a handheld PC provides. This project seeks to bridge the gap between applications designed for the large screen of a desktop computer, and the limited and valuable screen space of a handheld computer. By eliminating unnecessary screen clutter, replacing graphics with text, and overhauling other user interface components, an application originally intended for the desktop was successfully converted for use on both desktop and handheld platforms.

Total lightning mapping, along with radar and NLDN CG lightning data, were used in this study to diagnose and predict the severity of a storm. The height of maximum lightning activity and the number of flashes increased as a storm intensified during the 13 October 2001 supercell event, prior to tornadogenesis. Where reflectivity cores extended upwards was where most of the total lightning occurred.

Teaching life skills is an important part of special education. Students with moderate to severe disabilities need the functional living skills so that they are able to live more independently. The problem with teaching these skills is that after they are taught to the special needs students they do not retain the ability to do these skills. There are many methods out there that provide suggestions about different ways to teach these life skills. My research will explore one method of teaching these skills but I will also be observing other methods of teaching life skills. The method I will be implementing is task analysis, which involves breaking down a specific behavior into very specific steps. My research findings will show what method works best.

Biology

Are Socialized Wolves (Canis lupus) More Visible to Zoo Patrons, But More Dangerous to Keepers? Julia Preston-Fulton Many US zoos display wolves raised as pups with humans as well as with other wolves. This ôsocialization to humansö presumably makes wolves more relaxed around zoo patrons. However, socialized wolves may challenge humans for dominance, rather than avoiding them, placing keepers at risk of attack. I studied two socialized timber wolves at Ross Park Zoo (Binghamton, NY), four socialized wolves at Rosemond Gifford Zoo (Syracuse, NY) and four non-socialized wolves at New York State Zoo at Thompson Park (Watertown, NY) to determine their responses to zoo visitors. I also interviewed keepers about safety measures needed in maintaining the wolves.

The "Law of Value" is an exchange value given to an object based on the total amount of labor needed to produce and sell it. However, this notion has been pushed aside by a commodity's natural ability to fulfill a human want. The PLz traces across the entire southern Adirondacks in a roughly east-west direction. Published zircon geochronology from rocks within the PLz constrain the metamorphism to be associated with the Ottawan orogeny. The PLz is crosscut by a series of ductile shear zones that exhibit normal and oblique normal offset. It is possible that these normal shear zones, could be associated with the extensional deformation on the Carthage zone. But, the distribution of these small normal zones confines them within the boundaries of the PLz. Parental Divorce And Kinkeeping In Three Generational Families
Sara DeRycke
Psychology

Parental Divorce and Kinkeeping in Three Generational Families. To date there have been few empirical studies which have examined patterns of intergenerational kinkeeping, especially in the aftermath of parental divorce. The aspects of the familial division of labor and kinkeeping in three generational family units and the influence of the post divorce period need to be examined. The present study investigates the kinkeeping patterns of 227 three generational families and the effects of parental divorce. Results show that mothers and maternal grandmothers engage in the most kinkeeping followed by paternal grandmothers, then by fathers, finally by all grandfathers respectively. Results also indicate that divorce effects the kinkeeping ratings reported by the child.

Young people are often exposed to a variety of religious and philosophical beliefs. Our goal is to understand the factors that influence belief formation. Our survey asked OSU students about their past and present beliefs. Results (N=78) indicated (a) that students with greater knowledge base provide more in-depth discussion of beliefs different than their own, (b) students report about 3.5 shifts in belief between ages 5 and 22 years, (c) magnitude of stress was unrelated to frequency of transitions in beliefs. Additional analyses will explore the relationship between the timing of the transitions in beliefs and stressful life experiences.

Understanding Hurricane Tracks And Intensities: Comparison Of Hurricane Models
Joshua Kozlowski
Earth Sciences

Every Summer, Hurricane Season affects millions of people. Meteorologists still don't completely understand everything about hurricanes, including all factors that affect a storm's path or track. There is a wide variety of Computer Models that are used to forecast, but the question is what model works best? By comparing model forecasts from past storms versus actual position data recorded, this would be the first step towards the answer. If we can find this answer then as the National Weather Service puts it, we can possibly save lives that would otherwise be unsaved. Storms from the 1990's are analyzed and more conclusions are found than expected.
