2007 New Faculty Programs *In the Fall semester
events will usually be on Thursdays, 12:45-2:05 in 123 Penfield Library.
(Spring sessions will be on Mondays from 12:40-1:35, and will be planned with
input from the new faculty in the fall.)
The
Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) The mission for the center for faculty
and professional staff development is to serve the central mission of the
College as a learning-centered institution through actively promoting
excellence in learning, growth, and professional development of the
teacher-scholars who are the essential core of the College, our faculty and
professional staff. We intend to support the work of our teacher-scholars
throughout their professional careers. See
the CELT website (oswego.edu/celt) for an updated list of all the CELT
programs.
CELT
has planned a year-log series of workshops for our new faculty. These events
are scheduled around the College Hour schedule. These will be active workshops, designed to provide you an
opportunity to network outside of your academic area and give you information
that will prove useful to your career as a teacher and scholar. Coffee and
snacks will be provided.

30th – Jump Start on Teaching: Practical Strategies T. Mark Morey, Director of the
CELT will lead an active workshop exploring practical strategies with potential
for immediate impact on active, higher-level learning (and students’
evaluations of teaching).
September
6th – New Faculty Mentoring I: Sharing Ideas on “Learning the Ropes”
Sue Weber and Jessica
Hester, Co-Chairs of the Committee On Learning and Teaching (COLT) will lead an
active discussion about the Oswego definition of meaningful learning and
important resources at the College. Particularly
for new faculty and their departmental mentors.
September
20th - Developmental Advising: "Helping Students to Take
Ownership for Educational Planning" Kathleen
Evans, Assistant Dean of Students, and others will discuss the philosophy and
structure of academic advisement at Oswego and the tools and resources
necessary to be a good academic advisor.
They will also answer questions requirements and resources/opportunities
for students.

21st (Friday, 3:00-4:30pm) - Secrets Revealed: Research
Program Development and Grant Writing (panel)
(Held in Penfield Library Instruction Room #2) Jack Gelfand, Maria Nakamura, and Linda Cook
from the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), will be joined by a
panel of faculty who have had success in research and grant writing. They will discuss how the ORSP can help
faculty in finding grant opportunities and successful strategies for getting
grants from both internal and external sources.

27th – The Oswego Symposium on Learning and Teaching: A Celebration
of Meaningful Learning (Held in Hewitt Union) The focus is
“Spreading Practices to Enhance Learning”.
Peer-Reviewed Posters will be on display starting at 11 am, the Teaching
Awards Luncheon and talks will be from 12:45-2 in the Forum. A keynote address by Dr. Tom Carey (the
Chief Learning Officer of the MERLOT Consortium) will be about “Researching and
Sharing Exemplary Practices in Learning and Teaching” from 3:45-4:45 in Bell
Auditorium. There will be a reception
and poster discussion session from 4:45-6:30.

4th – Preparing Effective Materials for Retention, Promotion, and
Tenure Decisions (Held in Campus Center
Room #205) Provost Susan
Coultrap-McQuin along with Deans of College’s schools and representative
faculty members will talk about expectations for faculty at SUNY Oswego and
about how to effectively prepare for personnel evaluations. Learn what works.

25h – Teaching Students with Disabilities: Enhancing Learning for All Starr Knapp, the Director of Disability
Services will lead a discussion about legal obligations, resources. etc. Learn how faculty can promote learning by
using universal course design to become a more effective teacher.
November
8th –“What the Best College Teachers Do”: Ideas from Ken Bain et al.” Members of the Committee On
Learning and Teaching will discuss their experiences in using innovative and
evidenced-based approaches to effective teaching.
November
29th – New Faculty
Mentoring II: Sharing First Semester Experiences Dr. Mark Morey and others will lead a discussion with
participants sharing their learning in the mentoring process from both the
mentor and mentee perspectives. All new faculty members and their departmental
mentors are especially invited.
