HSC 470 Wellness Skills: Application and Assessment

Course Description:

This course will assist students in developing knowledge and skills related to assessing health related needs, and developing intervention strategies to address those needs. The health related topics to be covered may include, but are not limited to diseases such as: cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, AIDS, and health related behaviors such as: smoking cessation, diet, alcohol and drug misuse, physical activity, violence, and accidental and intentional injuries.

Course Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate understanding and ability to apply the concepts and methods of descriptive epidemiology to the analysis of the major health problems affecting people in the United States and conceptualize interventions to address those problems and thereby reduce health disparities (KNOWLEDGE, AUTHENTIC LEARNING, PRACTICE, REFLECTION, SOCIAL JUSTICE).
  2. Demonstrate understanding and ability to apply the concepts and methods of health education needs assessment to the analysis of the major health problems affecting people in the United States and conceptualize interventions to address those problems and thereby reduce health disparities (KNOWLEDGE, AUTHENTIC LEARNING, PRACTICE, REFLECTION, SOCIAL JUSTICE).
  3. Demonstrate understanding and ability to apply various health education and behavioral sciences theories in relation to health related behaviors that, in part, determine the health status and health disparities within the U.S. population (KNOWLEDGE, AUTHENTIC LEARNING, PRACTICE, REFLECTION, SOCIAL JUSTICE).
  4. Work in a small group to apply concepts concerning epidemiology, behavioral sciences, and health education in order to create and assessment and intervention plan for one of the major health problems affecting the U.S. population (KNOWLEDGE, AUTHENTIC LEARNING, PRACTICE, REFLECTION, SOCIAL JUSTICE). 
  5. Demonstrate skills in identifying resources related to assessment and intervention of health needs (KNOWLEDGE, AUTHENTIC LEARNING, PRACTICE, REFLECTION, SOCIAL JUSTICE).
  6. Demonstrate skills in written and oral communication, in using PowerPoint, and in using other communication media for health-related communications (KNOWLEDGE, AUTHENTIC LEARNING, PRACTICE, REFLECTION).
