Visit to Mathematics For Diverse Learners Course
Summer 2009 ( June 5 and June 12, 2009)
Teaching Mathematics for Diverse Learners (MAE 514) is a course that is for students primarily in the new (Master of Arts in Teaching) MAT program. Most of the students in the class will have earned a Bachelors degree in mathematics and will be taking this course as one of their first courses in the program, or will be a MSED student, who has a degree in education, but needs to finish a program.
The course is a Hybrid (blended), so much of the assignments are posted online and when we meet face to face, the time together is very important. You are a part of my plan for making the face to face time relevant and important.
As I understand it, you have agreed to present your perspective about teaching mathematics to diverse learners in my class. First of all, thank you for agreeing, to help these pre and new teachers better understand how create classrooms that accommodate diverse learners and maintain the rigors of mathematics. Students know that mathematics learning and mathematics pedagogy go together and so will be curious about how you run your mathematics classrooms and how you teach mathematics in the urban settings.
Here are some details:
· This is a 3 week class that meets Tuesday to Friday May 26 to June 13, 2009
· The classroom is at the Metro Center in Syracuse
· Meeting times are 4 – 6 pm.
· There could be up to 24 students in the class, but I suspect only 15
· Dr. Marcia Burrell’s, Associate Professor contact information burrell@oswego.edu, 312-3584, 113 Wilber Hall, Oswego, New York 13126
I am interested in you speaking on Fridays starting at 4: 30 pm for about 35 minutes and then 10 – 15 minutes of questions. I would like you to demonstrate anything you think might be of use in a (7-12) mathematics classroom. I believe that using technology mediates well the diverse learner and their understandings. I believe that the use of technology provides a bridge to better understandings and to our visual learners.
Here is a tentative Schedule for your presentations. If you say to me, that the date selected will not work, then I will change it in any way to accommodate your schedule. I want to work with you, in any way that it will work for you.

Please know how much I appreciate you volunteering for this. This is an amazing response, and I will love anything you do in the classroom. If you want to limit the time, that is fine. If you want a bit more time, that is fine too.
