Step by Step to Searching and Importing references using ENDNOTE X

·        Selecting and importing with the (endnote) program with you

A. Select files from a library database and import into the selected files directly into the endnote program.

What do you need?

i.The library database

ii.The program with the name of the file already set up

iii. Knowledge of how to import the file

            a. Using the software directly

            b. Using the save file feature

The steps with

Open the library database and search using the librarian’s (Barbara Shaffer) recommendations.

Go to ERIC. (You might go to Education Abstracts, or WilsonWeb or other content area databases.)

Put in the search terms.

1

Make a note the database used(i.e.: ERIC-Ebscohost, or Education Abstracts-Ebscohost, or WilsonWeb). If you did not make a note, you might be okay, but it is recommended.

2

Select the files of interest by adding them to the folder to the right of the screen.

3

Go to the folder. Notice the difference between this slide and the previous slide. Notice the menu PRINT, EMAIL, SAVE, EXPORT.

4

Export the references following these steps. You want to export the files using the following procedure.

5

Make sure you select—Direct Export to EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager.

(EDUCATION ABSTRACTS)

6

In advance, stop and make sure you have an endnote file set up.

Before all of this you have set up an ENDNOTE file with the name of the project.  My project Name is reference_search.enl.

Make sure you have ENDnote loaded according the directions. Open the program from your start menu etc.

7

Create a new library. The first choice in the list.

8

Name the file

9

This is what you will see. This file is empty and you will populate it.  You could have started a file and input by hand some files, and then added some files.

10

Let us go back to the library data base and import the files, clicking on save.

11

When you hit save. Select the file that you created in ENDNOTE.

12

It will come through like this

13

Scroll through using software to basically check that it looks correct

14

Importing using the Bibliographic method or alternate version using the save function.

(Example—ERIC)

15

The file comes in with the headings

—save as a text file on the desktop or somewhere you can find it easily.

16

Save the file as a text document somewhere on desktop

17

Import File

18

19

Import the proper filter –Ebsco ERIC, and then IMPORT

20

The first time you import you may see a file like this. It may select the type of reference file for you.

21

Scroll through using software to basically check that it looks correct

22

ERIC does not work properly using the software directly.

23

Questions: What happens when you hit save? BAD things. Nothing comes in. Do not do it. USE Export.

24

I have some concerns about multiple databases. I recommend searching individual databases. It does not work for me. I suggest searching one database at a time.

25

Once you are set on the sources, I suggest using copy formatted.

26

You can import this into your word or even wordperfect.

Background:

Original post sent to CELT

Endnote is a program that will help create a bibliography in seconds, organize your sources for multiple projects, and increase your research productivity.  Yes, you still have to write the paper and do the research, but this software eases the process.  Bring your research ideas. We will first search the library databases, download the sources immediately to EndNote, create a bibliography and insert the sources as required.

Building your EndNote Library -

  • Set up preferences and review navigation of the EndNote display
  • Learn how to search online sources, import text files downloaded from online sources and enter data manually

Formatting papers in MS Word® -

  • Search your EndNote library to
    locate references
  • Cite While You Write in MS Word
  • Edit citations to suppress author names, years or both
  • Change styles instantly
