About WTOP

    WTOP Charter

Who We are:

WTOP is a student-run organization. We are a television station that is broadcasted throughout the campus as well as on local access most of the time. Everything is carried out by students at SUNY Oswego, so all credit is due to the students involved. We are overseen by an academic advisor who happens to be a fan of the station, and this individual often gives us tips on how we can make the station better as a whole. Overall, the never ending work done by students is what makes WTOP a success.

General Purpose:

The main purpose of the presence of WTOP is so that students can learn. For those that are studying broadcasting, or any other major here at the school, WTOP offers a wide variety of volunteer jobs that serve as a learning experience to those who are interested. The television station is a place where people can make mistakes and learn from them, as well as take something away from it when the experience is over. Lastly, one of the key purposes of this organization is to promote student involvement within the campus and to spread the knowledge among peers. It’s important to learn something new every day, and students teaching students is both commendable and effective.

What we do as an organization:

There are many areas in which students can get involved. WTOP offers experience in all different kinds of aspects pertaining to television. Students are able to produce and direct their own shows (approved, of course); work crew for shows, sporting events, and even news; audition as talent for news, including positions such as anchors, reporters, on-air meteorologist and sports anchor; learn a variety of different positions that are crucial in creating a production; interview for an e-board position after being involved for at least one semester; work outside the station by means of promotions, sales, or even the finance of the station; and the list goes on. We have something that fits the interests of many students, and are very open-minded when it comes to ideas and questions anyone might have about our organization. Our main goal is for students to learn something from the experience, and get a chance for them to learn something from a student who was once in their shoes just starting out for the first time. We make it known what we do as an organization at the general meeting we hold at the beginning of every semester.

What we provide the student body:

WTOP is an organization that provides options and a vast array of opportunities for students to get hands-on experience so that the world of broadcasting outside of college isn’t a surprise. With our new multi-million dollar studio, we are able to do just that. This is a place where students can make mistakes and learn from them, as well as have a good time. Education is also important when it comes to this field, and WTOP makes it possible to take what students learn in class, and bring it to life.
