The Counseling and Psychological Services Department offers degree programs in Mental Health Counseling, Counseling Services and School Psychology.
The Mental Health Counseling program prepares students for licensure as a mental health counselor in the state of New York. As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, graduates may work in mental health agencies, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, private practice or a variety of other counseling careers.
The master's degree in the Counseling Services Program leads to provisional certification in New York as a school counselor and the CAS in Counseling Services leads to permanent certification as a school counselor in New York. Those certifications are necessary to work as a school counselor.
The master's degree in the School Psychology Program leads to provisional certification in New York as a school psychologist and the CAS in School Psychology leads to permanent certification as a school psychologist in New York. Those certifications are necessary to work as a school psychologist.
Majors and Programs
The Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) Department, led by an outstanding faculty, offers three graduate programs that lead to Master of Science Degrees in Mental Health Counseling, or School Psychology.
Additionally, a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) is offered in Counseling Services and School Psychology, and a Graduate Certificate Program in Play Therapy certification is offered in the Mental Health Counseling course of study.
Students in the CPS Department have the opportunity to participate in applied research. Annually, many students within our department travel with faculty to present research at statewide and national conferences.
CPS students have access to 14 graduate assistantships specifically for students within the separtment. Many other graduate assistantships exist throughout the college.
Students may participate in two CPS department organizations. The CPS Club engages in projects to bring information, service opportunities and social experiences to students. The CPS department also has a chapter of the national Chi Sigma Iota club, a professional counselor student organization.

Because all CPS programs lead to either licensure or certification in their respective fields, most students go on to find employment as mental health counselors, school psychologists or school counselors. Many go on to earn doctorates in their fields.
