For returning transfer students, we want to make sure that you're on the
right path and didn't forget anything.
You can use the checklist below to verify that you're headed in the right
direction.
___1. Have you confirmed your major? Nothing is more
important that making sure the degree program you're in is the right one for
you. We understand that you needed to declare a major before transferring in,
we want to make sure it's the right major for you. The Compass has some great
tools to help you confirm your choice in degree program.
___2. Have you started your resume? You most likely are
planning on graduating in about a year and a half and that's not a lot of time
and it will go by fast. It's important that you get working on that resume now
so that you're prepared when it's time to look for jobs. Our Career Services
office can get you going.
___3. Have you planned an internship? Employers want to see
that you have some real world work experience and an internship is a great way
to do that. Internships are very flexible and are easy to work into even the
busiest schedule. Check with Experience Based Education for more information.
___4. Are you volunteering your time? Again, employers want
to see that you've been active outside the classroom and are contributing to
your community. The Center for Service Learning and Community Service can
match you up with a volunteer experience that will fit your schedule and
interests.
a. Have you thought about being a mentor? The MOST
Program is always looking for returning transfer students who want to help
incoming transfer students. You've lived the experience, now you can help
someone else survive their first year. Give it some thought.
___5. Have you thought about study abroad? So
many transfer students don't think they have the time to participate in study
abroad or they don't want to make the time. Studying abroad can be a great way
to earn credits and get some great experience outside the classroom. Having
knowledge of other cultures and countries make you a very marketable person.
Think about the study abroad program.
___6. Are you a leader? Don't forget that leadership roles
on campus are abundant and they're important! Taking on a leadership role in a
club, organization, or department provide you with valuable experience working
with others and can be great resume builders.
___7. How many faculty do you know outside the classroom?
Faculty aren't just here to teach, they're also here to help provide you
direction for the future. Make sure that you're connecting with some faculty
outside the classroom.
Hopefully this checklist will help steer you on the path to getting the most
out of your college experience and making yourself a more marketable
employee. If you need further assistance or want to talk to someone more about
any of the above suggestions, feel free to stop by the Compass for some 1-on-1
help.
