Job Description/Program Overview:

Mentor-Scholar is an academic and social mentoring program that partners SUNY Oswego undergraduates and Oswego Middle School students through the academic year. Mentoring pairs meet biweekly in the hour after school to work on homework and general academics while addressing social issues and having fun. SUNY Oswego students participate in a two credit hour GST 302 course through the fall and spring semesters addressing issues on mentoring, poverty and adolescent growth in the context of youth programming.

Graduate Assistant Responsibilities:

The Mentor-Scholar Graduate Assistant will work closely with district administration, staff and faculty at the Oswego Middle School, and college personnel in implementing a large-scale mentoring program called "Mentor-Scholar." The Graduate Assistant will be responsible recruiting, selecting, and training undergraduate mentors.  This will include the design and implementation of a one-credit course intended to increase mentor knowledge in the areas of cultural competency, adolescent development, and secondary education. We are looking for enthusiastic applicants who work well as part of a team and possess the skills necessary to work independently in implementing new initiatives.

The Graduate Assistant will be responsible for:

•   The recruitment and selection of undergraduate mentors
•   Teaching a  1 - Credit GST course designed for mentors
•   Support a staff of 6 student Team Leaders
•   Assist with other duties as assigned by the Mentor-Scholar Project Coordinator including clerical duties and statistical reporting

The successful candidate will present evidence of the following qualifications:

Required:

•    Passion for educational equity
•    Work as an effective member of a professional team, with high levels of integrity, energy and confidentiality
•    Possess organizational skills, effective time management skills, strong written and oral communication skills with proven interpersonal skills

Preferred:

•     Experience with middle and/or high school students
•     Experience in curriculum design and/or course facilitation

Terms of Employment and Compensation:

•    Twenty hours per week including stipend of $5,600 per academic year appointment, health benefits (provided by graduate student union) and 6 credit hours per semester.

•    Term of employment is for one academic year from August 2013 through May 2014. There is no obligation to work during the period of academic recess. GA's generally start two weeks prior to the academic year in August and one week before the start of second semester.

•    Graduate Assistant must be a full-time graduate student matriculated into a graduate program at SUNY Oswego by the start of employment. During each semester of employment, Graduate Assistant must maintain a B average and be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours but no more than 12 credit hours.

•    Graduate Assistant must abide by the rules and regulations of the College, both on and off campus, as identified in the Student Handbook.
