Emergency Evacuation
You may have students in your classroom who could require assistance in the event that it was necessary to evacuate your building. Students with mobility impairments , who may depend on an elevator to reach your classroom, will not have that option in the event of a fire alarm. Elevators are shut down and are not to be used in these circumstances. If a student is unable to evacuate via the stairs, they should move into the nearest stairwell and wait there for assistance. It is possible they may need some help getting to the stairwell. Faculty members are asked to see that these students receive the help that they may need.
If a student is left in a stairwell, the faculty member is asked to notify the emergency personnel (University Police or Fire Department) and identify the location where the student is located. Emergency service personnel will take over responsibility from that point.
It is advised that faculty members discuss these possibilities and procedures in advance. While we ask students with disabilities (like all students) to be their own advocates and express their needs, not all are ready to assume this role or anticipate all possible needs. Please do invite students to talk with you if they feel they might need assistance in an emergency.
