News and Announcements

• (Posted 02/03/2012) ICE SKATING LESSONS for the Spring, 2012 semester are now taking place 4 days per week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays) from 12:45 PM to 1:45 PM, during regular Open Skate sessions.
• (Posted 10/21/2011)  SIZE 14 HOCKEY SKATES - We have added one pair of size 14 (Adult Mens) hockey-style skates to our rental inventory.  
• (Posted 09/27/2011)  CANCELLED SESSION - Open Skate session scheduled for Monday, October 3rd (12:00 PM tp 2:00 PM) has been cancelled. 
• (Posted 09/16/2011)  CANCELLED SESSIONS - Open Skate sessions scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 4th (12:00 PM to 2:00 PM and 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM) have been cancelled.
• (Posted 08/15/2011)  The time slots for Tuesday evening Open Skate sessions have changed, and are now 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM.
• (Posted 08/15/2011)  Please note that the time slots for Open Skate sessions on Sunday, Oct. 16th and Sunday, Nov. 13th have been changed to 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM. All other Sunday time slots remain 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM.

About Open Skating at SUNY Oswego

Open Skate sessions take place at the Campus Center ArenaDistance view of Open Skate participants at the SUNY Oswego Campus Center Arena and Convocation Center, and are managed by the SUNY Oswego Skate Shop - which operates as part of the programs and services provided by the Department of Campus Life.  The mission of the Skate Shop is to provide a safe, controlled, and enjoyable environment for members of the campus community and general public to participate in ice skating as a recreational activity. 

Open Skate participants enter the arena through the main doors at the lower level of the Campus Center.  Immediately adjacent to these doors is the Skate Shop, which occupies room C024 and can be reached by phone at (315) 312-2578 during regular operating hours (see schedule).  Those who have questions, concerns or suggestions regarding SUNY Oswego's Open Skate program can e-mail the Skate Shop's manager by clicking HERE.


Open Skate Rules (Skate at Your Own Risk) 

Participants of SUNY Oswego's Open Skate program acknowledge that skating is a potentially hazardous activity that presents an inherent risk of serious personal injury.  Skaters participate at the own risk, and agree to accept responsibility for their own health & safety while at the facility.

Employment Opportunities

The Skate Shop employs reliable, conscientious students who work on a part-time basis to provide staffing for regular Open Skate sessions and special skating events.  Student employees provide support in the Skate Shop by collecting fees, supplying rental skates to customers, and sharpening skates.  Student employees also work as on-ice "Skate Guards" to assist and ensure the safety of Open Skate participants.

Preferred skills/experience for student employees of the Skate Shop include:  Ice Skating, First Aid, Cash Handling, Customer Service.

TO APPLY FOR A JOB, applicants can complete and submit the e-form version of the Skate Shop's Application for Student Employment, which can be sent by e-mail directly to the Skate Shop Manager.  The application is also available for download in PDF format by clicking HERE.  Printed copies of completed applications can be dropped off or mailed to:  Tim Graber, Department of Campus Life, 135 Campus Center, SUNY Oswego, Oswego, NY  13126.   [PLEASE NOTE: Applications for employment do not carry over from the previous school year.  Students who apply, but do not get hired, must re-apply in August if they still want to be considered for a position at the Skate Shop.   Link to top of page



Skate Shop Services

The services provided by the Skate Shop during Open Skate sessions include the following:

•  SKATE RENTALS
ThA pair of Reidel hockey-style rental skates.e Skate Shop has an inventory of 96 pairs of figure skates (women's whole sizes 10 YOUTH to 13 A Reidel figure-style rental skate.ADULT) and 105 pairs of hockey skates (men's whole sizes 10 YOUTH to 14 ADULT), which are available for rental by Open Skate participants.   Link to top of page

•  ADAPTIVE ICE SPORT SLED RENTALSUNY Oswego student Krista Pattemore uses the Adpative Ice Sport Sled during Open Skate
Originally designed for persons with mobility-related disabilities, the Adaptive Ice Sport Sled is a specialized device that has two skate blades mounted on a bracket which supports a metal frame and plastic seat.  The sled's frame is adjustable to accomodate a wide range of user sizes.  The sled comes with two short hockey sticks which have been equipped with small picks.  These allow the user to manuever around the ice using only their upper body strength.  Skate Shop personnel are available to provide instruction for those who are using the sled for the first time.    Link to top of page

•  SKATE TRAINING AIDS
Two sSmall red skater training aid.izes of Skate Training Aids (a.k.a. "walkers" or "pushers") are available to Open Skate participants.  The smaller size is suitable for small children (up to 65 lbs.), while the larger version is appropriate for larger children, teens, and adults.    Link to top of page

•  SKATE SHARPENINGSparks fly as a skate is sharpened at the SUNY Oswego Skate Shop
With its Blademaster Skate Sharpening Machine, the Skate Shop provides expert service for both hockey and figure skates.  The machine includes a direct-drive cross grinding station and a finishing station to accommodate blades of all conditions (new, dull, or rusty).  Skates can be sharpened with hollows ranging from 1/4" to 1", as requested by the customer.    Link to top of page

•  ICE SKATING LESSONS
Group ice skating lessons are FREE for all Open Skate participants at certain times during regular daytime Open Skate sessions (see below).   These lessons are suitable for beginner, intermediate - and even advanced skaters.  There is no registration required.  Open Skate customers can participate in lessons on an intermittent, casual basis - as their schedules allow.
