Player of the Week

Sophomore Elena Sanchez-Freeman has been selected as this week's Campus Recreation Player of the Week.

Sanchez-Freeman was selected to her standout performance in the co-rec competitive volleyball league at SUNY Oswego. Sanchez-Freeman's team, Practice Safe Sets, is off to a 6-0 start in the league after sweeps over We Always Get it In and Spiked Cocktails.

Sanchez-Freeman benefitted her team not only offensively with her dynamic serve, but also defensively, setting up her teammates and making excellent volleys and spikes across the net.

"We are a very united team and we work together very well," said Sanchez-Freeman.

A Language and International Trade major from Champlain, New York, Sanchez-Freeman plays indoor and beach volleyball at Oswego, as well as soccer.

"It's good teambuilding, I've met a lot of people through it," Sanchez-Freeman said about her experience with intramural sports. "I only knew one person initially going on my beach volleyball team, and now they are all my friends."

Sanchez-Freeman has been playing volleyball since she was in fifth grade, which she says has greatly improved her performance in intramurals. "When you're playing at this level with people who have been competing for a long time, it definitely helps to have experience."

Along with playing intramurals, Sanchez-Freeman is also on the Oswego Equestrian team, and says that core strength for both sports is a similarity. She also notes that working at the gym and with her personal trainer has helped her improve.

Sanchez-Freeman and the rest of Practice Safe Sets will continue their season this Monday, March 11th  as they take on Set For Life for a three game match.
